Northern Woods are still pretty thin and brown for now. The deciduous trees are just now starting to pop in earnest. They could have gone to evergreen country but leafy scenes are only now coming online.

You do realize that there are states below the Mason-Dixon line? Ford and BN could have easily taken a detour through southern states for plenty of greenery.
