How Do You Define Off-Roading?

I think the essence of off-roading is leaving the paved roads behind and heading into places few people ever see. Starting from the city, then into the forests, the deserts, the hills, the snow... Getting stuck in mud, crossing streams, climbing over obstacles. The fun of off-roading is endless. For anyone who loves nature, it’s just amazing. You can get away from crowds, escape the noise, and feel completely immersed in the moment.

At the end of the day, it’s all about having fun. That’s it.

I’m curious how you define off-roading. What do you go off-roading for? This might seem like a broad question, but I’d love to hear different takes.

I have been on the Rubicon trail, rock crawling in Moab, nice forest roads and sandy beaches. The only time I had to winch was a muddy driveway that was sloped toward a fence.

Didn't winch because I was stuck, had to stay off of the fence.

The quiet forest roads are my favorite.

It's an interesting question, and I bet it will get a variety of responses!

For me, it means driving away from paved or dirt roads to get to a remote destination. Two tracks, fields and creek crossings qualify for me. I respect those who do Moab, Rubicon, etc. It's just not my thing.

It's a good question and honestly I am not sure what my opinion is. I like nice, quiet forest roads. I'm risk averse, and not interested in breaking my truck. I have no interest in driving a tough road just because it exists. I want to go to places, and am willing to deal with obstacles in the way if I have to, but it's not mandatory.

I'm also not sure I feel that it's reasonable to call myself the same thing that the guys who WANT to break their trucks on a path just because it exists.

The like most stories with two sides, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. I suppose a reasonable answer is taking my truck somewhere that it's not reasonable to take my Mustang would be offroad.

i comes down to where i live . east or west out west i built more for prerunning where i am now built more for trails . with a littlel high speed .

I've done some fire roads and some logging trails. Nothing too far out there. My Bronco is also my daily driver so don't want to beat it up too much, but definitely don't mind if it gets muddy. Slamming rocks into the undercarriage may be a little to exiting for me at this point. Someday though.

For me off-roading roughly begins when I reach the point where you would not take a car or a stock 2 wheel drive truck. Once there I enjoy exploring the desert south west with the occasional high speed runs down miles long sand washes or desert road.

Where I live, off-roading means on the beach. No local trails and definitely no places few have seen lol.

Great topic! Off roading to me is going out with a group of friends and having fun. It could be on gravel roads, rocks, Baja, anywhere.

I personally love the scenery, giving each other shit when you break, but being the first one to pitch a hand to help fix it. Just enjoying each trip. It’s never the same, each trip is an adventure!

I love going out in nature and exploring. Driving on a beach in the outer banks, hitting a tight forest trail in the Appalachia mountains, exploring service roads… it’s all so fun to me.
