How to protect exposed spare tire from the elements??

I am talking about radials though, and even new ones.
That is why a tire expires even if it has never been installed.

So what did classic cars have to do with the standard six-year expiration date? If you haven't needed it in that amount of time, consider yourself lucky and buy five new ones.

The classic car example was only to pointing out that tires lubricants get spread around with use.

FWIW The meguiars endurance tire spray has a really nice finish

Ppf film, then a ceramic coating, followed by spray on protectant, then park in a garage.

Make sure that garage is climate controlled.

Just checked that original post. Yep. There's a new belt holder.

My recommendation is to PPF the belt...

I had this great response involving protection vs longevity with products like Carpro Perl or Aero 303 but I think @HotdogThud already has things sorted out. The only thing I could add is a liberal coating of zinc oxide like the lifeguards of old would use for warpaint when about to enter battle against children running around the pool or unauthorized horseplay.

Well they are on all my vehicles. I had the original spare on my 04 TJ, for 18 years, no issues. Why is this other stuff needed?

However I found that the non rotating tire seems to get dirtier than the 4 rotating ones. Over the weekend I cleaned all tires with wheel/tire cleaner from TurtleWax and then coated with tire/trim protectant from Griot. The rear tire was absolutely brown before cleaning

Thats a good question.. I’ve never had an exposed tire before..

In all seriousness, just do a 5-tire rotation every oil change.

Wouldnt it take much longer for dry rot to settle in that when its time to rotate tires? Unless you only plan on rotating 4..

When I worked at a Goodyear plant they told me when a tire sits the tread bond degrades. They described it as oil leaching from the rubber. I'm not a chemist but after 4 years I learned the hard way trailer tires treads will separate at highway speeds.

With an 80's Bronco I used to have I went out one day and the spare tire had literally exploded. It looked like there was an explosive placed inside the tire at the top. I hadn't used it in years, no garage and had quit rotating it. It had probably been exposed in that same position for 4-5 years. Lesson learned. Rotate the spare. Not a fan of covers.
