I'm thinking of getting some half-length boards - anyone have experience with those? should be easy to mount and always have with me.

Yeah, I wondered about that as well. I surely hope not. Patent pricing is ridiculous.

Patent's are dirt cheap, compared to defending a patent, multiply X 10 to get started. Then there's the Texas patent court shake down scam, that used to be highway robbery.

Is there any sort of option like this for those of us with no mounting holes on the roll bars? I have a FE and don't have the holes.

Your only option really is to drill the holes and install the nutserts to support mounting. I’ve had a few people ask about it and some have done it. My only advice, coming from them, is to use a new drill bit as the rollbar steel is very tough. Here’s a quick video that I shot for someone else.
