I am looking to purchase a rear bumper with swing out(s) for the spare tire in the next couple of weeks…..hoping to maybe even get a Black Friday deal somehow but we’ll see if anything is offered.
Anyway I’ve been searching other threads and haven’t really seen any real talk about the different types and more importantly the benefits and/or draw backs of the different type. Not sure the brand really matters although I have strongly considered the Rockhard 4x4 but because of the weight and just fatness of it I’m kinda now leaning to the Expedition One which is more sleek and has better lines. And I also like the centered tire carries….For now……That could change though.
So I guess looking for a consensus on what is the best. Pretty much there are three types:
Tailgate Reinforcements:
Would love to hear the pros and cons….I guess my major issue is there is still all the weight on the tailgate regardless of added reinforcement and anyone hitting any whoops or maybe even some hard hit’s might still do some damage. And not to sure about adding additional weight of jerry cans which is something I may do.
Not sure how to label this next one but we’ll just say
Integrated Tailgate/Bumper Swingout Carrier:
I have the Expedition one in mind…..it adds a bumper, but the actual tire carrier mechanism is still attached to the tailgate to lock it into place. So now the bumper is attached to the tailgate. Let’s talk about those whoops again….could there possibly be an issue of damage to the tailgate because the bumper and tailgate being two separate pieces are now one. Could there be forces that work against each other….Best example I can think of is when you see a truck hit some bumps and the bed of the truck moves separately from the cab. Maybe I’m way off with that assessment but I do have concerns.
Last is
Bumper with Swingout:
Rockhard 4x4 as earlier mentioned….The tire carrier is attached to the bumper and that’s it. These are obviously the best choice for sturdiness and robustness. The problem though is that those type of bumpers are very heavy. Rockhard 4x4 being around 240+ lbs when all is said and done. And others I’ve seen up to 275lbs
So although I’d like to get a full bumper solution I'm not sure the weight is a good trade off. The expedition one comes out to about 130 lbs from what I can glean from their spec sheets which seems ideal. So I guess just want to get some advice and what you all think.
