I'm not certain, not very familiar with this engine yet. This is exactly where Sarah-n-Tuned connected her catch can on her 2.3l.

Thank you for the write up and pictures. New to this type of engine and trying to decide if the catch-can is needed - BUT- if (when?) I get my Bronco, this is very helpful. Following for the future.

I'd say make sure it's connected to the black separator on the driver side of the engine. There may be other vent lines but that is where the connection needs to be, then trace to the other end.

Agreed, I installed it as mishimoto calls for in their instructions. Just trying to confirm if this is sufficient or have we missed another line that would also require a catch can.

I was wondering about this also. My only other experience with a catch can was on my B58 BMW engine where it vented from the valve cover back into the intake. Of course not every engine is the same but I keep looking at this line and it seems to be doing exactly what I described on my B58. I can't find a proper digram of the 2.3l engine bay so I could be way off but it would be very annoying to think I have a catch can to protect my engine and it turns out there is another line. If someone from Mishimoto could tell me i'm being stupid it would certainly make me feel better.

This is indeed the line and I downloaded the shop manuals here to confirm. I've emailed @Mishimoto so many times and they never have an answer. I even posted a question on their page regarding the PCV line and they didn't reply.

Here is the pdf of just how to remove the Crankcase Ventilation tube. Note there is only one according to this manual.

Adding the Crankcase Vent Oil Separator PDF too.

Interesting, so we have a crankcase vent and a separate crankcase vent with an oil separator. You would think the one labeled oil separator is where you would want the catch can, this is how mishimoto has it setup. I guess that’s good enough for me.

Apologies that I missed that question before, but that line is the CCV side of the ventilation system. Basically, the PCV side handles a majority of the ventilation with the CCV side taking over under certain conditions. From our experience, and depending on the engine, the CCV rarely collects more than just a musky odor during our testing with the PCV side being the main source of the blow-by. Though, some engines do end up needing protection on that side of the system in some cases, specifically the early V6 EcoBoosts, all the way up to the current 2.7 Bronco option

Thanks Nick @Mishimoto . This makes perfect sense and appreciate the clarity.

I am halfway through my installation and was able to unhook the crankcase line without removing the fender liner. It is possible, but will result in scratches and bruises on the forearm!

Definitely wouldn't have known where to look, though, without this guide. Thanks!

Now to figure out how to unhook the top end of the hose. 🤔

Hey everyone,

Quick question. Are Catch Cans necessary for the 2.3 and 2.7 Bronco Motors? Im in no way a gearhead and just curious if it is really necessary or nice to have. Im trying to research to get exactly what they do.

My stance is if it were necessary, it'd be on there from the factory... so it's a nice to have?

There's a lot of information on this topic specifically for Bronco. Including this thread.

Do some searching and read up.

I agree 100%, if it was necessary, the a factory would have installed it. Like capable offroad tires on the Sasquatch package (oops), or cup holders on the 4-door (plenty of people on here would argue this point), or not welding on the ring for the 210 diff, or making tie rods that don't snap in two when you look at them wrong.

There are thousands of things that didn't come from the factory which are necessary when you use this off road *capable* vehicle for it's designed function. And the Factory's only function is to produce something to sell. Nothing more, nothing less.

Has anyone experienced a fairly strong oil smell after driving for a while? Particularly when idling/having outside air turned on? I haven't had my first oil change yet so may be just old oil stinking it up.
