I know there someone has this question. I put 285 75 17 on my non sas badlands. Did not remove crash bars- easy have an 1 inch on full articulation. Moves it up to 34s with same width. I had my ko2s on (73k miles) from factory. Wanted k03 because i loved the bfg but that size was not available until August and couldn't wait. Went with Toyo Open country at3. It was only load C available(has e load as well) Smooth n quiet. No issues on the wet road. A little squirrely around 70+ but I'm not sure if it is the tire itself or the height difference, or cross wind as it's been bad. Considered the nitto recon and ko3 in the 285/70 but really wanted to move up. I had the wild peak at 4th and everything else a distant 5th. It is my commuter, beach drive and gets me to the mountains 1 or 2x in the summer. Pictures of Traveler attached

Sorry- yes Mine came w 285 70 17s And these are 285 75s. Both are 11.2 wide but it went from 32.7 (33s) to close to 34. I think the other tire I was trying to find was a 295/70, which I believe are also right at 34 but 11.6 wide. I think it could have accommodated that but it's a weird size and not a lot of options. Dt said 295/70 and 305/70 Would both fit when they looked them up. Not sure about 305s w crash bar on but I wouldn't be afraid of the 295/70. You can definitely feel the bump in height from the ones I had on but like i mentioned before it dances a little at speed and I'm not sure if it is the Toyo or the bigger contact patch with the increased size, but it feels looser.

What has your mpg been since going to the 285/75? Compared to the stock 285/70s?

I started with 255/75r17 stock Big Bend tires @22.8mpg. After the new 285/75s I am at 20.6mpg.

I do have the 3.73 gears which I think makes the mileage hit from the larger diameter tires more pronounced.

I know that @Scott M saw a 1.5-2mpg drop going from stock BD to these, and he has 4.46 gears IIRC.

Would appreciate yours (and everyones) opinion: what do you think would be the max diameter without removing the crash bars? 34 or 35?

I think 35 crash bars have to come off. 34 is fine but if you get too wide (like 12.5) it may rub. That's all speculation tho.
