Been looking for an offroad app for sync to help navigate forest service roads. I have been playing around with Gaia GPS. Anyone have any luck with another App? This one is $40 a year to download maps so I am hesitant to buy in. I use to have a sd card for my Garmin with the maps, just looking for something similar for sync. Ohh it's pretty cool to play with around town.

I payed for both Gaia and OnXOffroad.

The OnX app and trail library is really really nice. However in my experience the CarPlay integration from OnX is unreliable when your phone is not in airplane mode. It would seem that it doesn't like having Internet access and then losing it.

Gaia seems to just work though and their integration seems limited. You can do your Gaia work on a desktop/laptop compute and then sync it over into the app. Its got a steeper learning curve but is very powerful.

I've used OnX Off-road, Viewranger, and MotionX-GPS. I'm not too impressed with any of them, but I like MotionX the best *IF* I already have a GPS track for the trail. Their interface is archaic, but they seem to have the best tracking/real-time mapping (if you pre-load that section of map).

I can't see to get the OnX app to show anything when connected to CarPlay.

I am using OnX & there are times that the wireless CarPlay act up & the screen will either not show or not update. I have better luck when I use a wired connection.

Thanks, I’ll try the wire connection

So there is no great option, I downloaded On X to try. I will go to youtube for a bit and see which one checks more boxes. I figured someone already figured this out and I'm just late to the party.

So I don't think it will mirror on the sync screen but trails off-road is a good free alternative to gaia and onx. Mount the phone for steady viewing and combo with the nav system screen on sync(if you have that option).

I used Gaia this past weekend in Vermont.

It kind of worked on Apple Car play. It gave voice guidance but did not finish the sentence.

Their overland overlay which shows dirt and gravel roads was a nice feature.

I also tried OnX for the trails they had listed. I used that information to plan a route on the Gaia website and then downloaded it to my phone for Apple Car play useage.

It worked well and I will keep using it.
