Really hoping someone can help me here. I have a DV8 FS-15 front bumper with winch installed and the Whipple intercooler and tune.

I have a check engine light issue and the dealership is telling me that it's because the winch is causing the turbos to overheat. This seems really weird to me but I'm not sure if it could somehow be blocking the vents?

My problem is that I'm a new Texas resident and it will not pass inspection with the check engine light. Of course the dealership will not touch it. I am considering taking it to an offroad shop and having them remove the winch, but wondered if anyone else had any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

What code is it throwing?
Do you have anything blocking the intercooler?
The winch shouldn't matter because it's not really mounted any differently then a factory Ford winch mount on a modular bumper.

As long as you don't have anything in the orange area below, I don't see any reason it would be causing something to overheat.

You don't need an inspection in Texas any more.

But the winch could be causing issues. depending on how it is mounted, and how the charge cooler is mounted.

Hi Jeff. Can we get a few details and pictures? Does the engine light come on immediately or after the engine reaches operating temperatures? Have you gone through your instrument cluster to look at engine temperatures? Did the dealership go into your computer an pull out codes specifying hot turbos or did they just see the new intercooler and come up with some reason not to service it since it's no longer stock? Right now, I think your idea of taking it to a dedicated 4x4 shop is the smart thing.

Also, are your active vents functioning?

Thanks so much for the reply! I have a Baja Designs light bar in that area. Maybe that is causing the issue?

Need pictures to help and need to know the codes it has. Charge air temp would have to be through the roof to cause issues. That temp can be seen in the gauge cluster.

As stated by others, we don't have inspections in Texas any longer.

Some counties with major metros still require emissions testing.

You don't need an inspection in Texas any more.

More than likely, yes. It's directly in front of the intercooler I would bet.

Quick update for everyone. Got the vehicle back from the dealer and the CEL was mysteriously gone so I drone it straight to the inspection place and it passed!

Am I nuts in thinking that slot was for a light? I'm surprised DV8 or my installer would not have said something ahead of time.

Thanks again to everyone for their help!

This was pre-Raptor launch but the Raptor critical cooling zones are commensurate with those illustrated.

Wow! The value of this forum never ceases to amaze me! Thanks so much for sending this! I've been struggling with this issue for years. Check out the picture of my setup. I'm going to move the light bar to up above the windshield and see if that resolves the issue.

Let us know. From the pic, I wonder if it’s gonna be enough. The very design of that bumper seems to be the issue.

It it is almost as if the CAD guy said “Intercooler? We don’t need no stinking intercooler!” 🤣
