Just purchased an el cheapo Baofeng UV-9G GMRS radio that works surprisingly well, particularly given its price point. Now the question is how to secure it inside the cabin, within reach of the driver. I mostly offroad alone, so the radio will be used only for the occasional outing with a local 4x4 group.

My initial thought was to buy this and screw it in the dash mount (1/4-20 thread I am told)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09WZQDK2X/

Then mount this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09T319RZV/
to this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004O8LF26/
and attach to the dash with a long arm, for example
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082YFP982/

This all adds up to more than the cost of the radio itself. Feels like I should just throw the radio in the cupholder on occasions i need it and call it a day. Suggestions?

P.S. Found this thread after posting, mods feel free to delete

This is what I'm doing now. It's not super close but is still reachable.

I leave my handheld in the cup holder and use an external mic and clip it to my seatbelt

The phone holder was a mount I already had but all the threading worked just fine.

Nice and solid. Would recommend.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

@Bschurr - great idea, will probably start there and see how it goes. The external mic for the Baofeng UV-9G is only $13

@HPNQ420 - sweet compact mount. Proclip has a good BF sale right now, however it is not clear what the clip suitable for the UV-9G is. I may just put a 9mm notch in the bracket and use the clip mount to hang the unit directly in the bracket. Or I may buy this
https://www.ebay.com/itm/394006386278
paint and mount it to the proclip

@Imonamoose that's quite a system you have there, but it costs 3x more than my radio itself. If I go that way I will probably get this
https://a.co/d/5w4XvGn
and clip it to the passenger grab handle, then buy and paint this
https://www.ebay.com/itm/134593279982
and screw it into the 1/4-20 screw

The Mountains2metal sasquatch basket works really well for this. Puts it in a great location.

Found the perfect (for me) solution... I think
https://www.lidoradio.com/products/yoke-mount-for-icom-and-yaesu-handheld-aviation-transceivers

Can clamp it to the grab handle or a 1" ball on the dash, or pretty much any other protrusion

They also have a HT+speaker mount
https://www.lidoradio.com/products/jeep-grab-bar-ht-and-speaker-mic-mount?variant=40322487025753

You can get a 20% off coupon when you sign up for their newsletter

--OR--

I may just buy the proclip mount and 3D print a simple bracket that matches to the base. If I get this
https://www.proclipusa.com/products/855700-ford-bronco-center-dash-mount
I can print two brackets that mount the HT either vertically or horizontally.

Decisions, decisions...

I don’t have a handheld mounted to it in the picture, but the HookeRoad overhead molle panel solves a lot of storage problems

I have a mobile built in radio for the dash mount. I use the passenger grab handle with molle to secure a handheld. Clips in just right.
