Sport mode remaps the throttle response and, if you have an auto-magic transmission then it changes the shift points. It also tightens up the steering on electric steering.

My wife's F-150 gets better gas mileage in sport mode in moderat city traffic, because it holds the gears longer, which means it is using less boost. On the highway it generally doesn't matter since you will be in your top gear anyway.

With sport mode hanging onto lower gears longer, it also downshifts sooner and causes your engine to turn at high rpms. The higher rpms cause excess and usually unnecessary heat which is likely the new vehicle, burn off smell you are detecting

Adding to this which is correct, 4A preps the transfer case to be ready to lock up at any moment so you’re creating more mechanical heat just by default too.

Great theories, guys. I’m sure there’s truth to them. What I smelled was definitely some sort of burning oil in nature. It was a slight smell, so that’s why I thought it was something from the outside. But it went away soon after I switched back. Probably has to do with engaging something for the first time and heating up, thus causing burn off.

Hello @baozebub sorry to dig out this post on you but I wanted to ask if you had any bad after effects of the sport mode 4 auto experience with the oil smell after? How do you use sport mode now? I’ve used sport mode twice starting and staying in 4 auto, I drove on surface streets but really drove aggressively. First time no smell but I had AC on in recirc mode so no outside air, no smells. Today I ripped around like a hoonigan with the vent on pulling outside air and I definitely had a gear oil smell after. I looked high and low, nothing amiss that I could see. 🤷‍♂️

I having been running Sport Mode in good weather/dry conditions for a while. I shift to 2H and it works like a beast. I too have concerns about any 4 wheel engagement on dry pavement. No matter what the manual says. I never change anything on the fly either. Stop, Park, Switch, Go. I guess I'm old school, but I want this thing to last. BTW, I have 4A as well.

I’ve used Sport Mode a few times already, for aggressive driving, and haven’t had any issues. As a few people said, it’s designed for asphalt driving, so Sport away!

That burnt oil smell was likely due to new engine burning some residual manufacturing material in the engine and I haven’t smelled anything since.

I drive in SPORT (4A) off the freeways, in subrban roads. When on a "straight" freeway drive, I switch to ECO (2H). Nowadays with my Pedal Commander I just use NORMAL (4H). Plenty responsive without having to guzzle too much gas.

Thought I’d check out the pedal commander and looked at the video on the site you linked. The knucklehead named Durso, with the icky neck hair, said it uses an “electronical” response. Electronical?? Hope he’s not the programmer. Pass.
cant find what you’re talking about. I love mine. Do some more research, watch a YouTube video of the install. It literally does nothing besides removing the lag. Which is all you need to feel a more spirited drive. I’d buy it 100x over.

4A is the default in Sport mode

2H is the Default 4x4 Mode for SPORT. See Manual:
"For sporty driving with improved performance handling and response. This mode increases
accelerator pedal response and provides a sportier steering feel. The powertrain system holds onto lower gears longer, helping your vehicle accelerate faster.
Two-wheel drive high is the default four-wheel drive mode. Four-wheel drive low is not selectable in sport mode."

Yeah you can't use sport mode in 2H although you can, if I recall, switch to sport, which is 4A and then get it into 4H.
I use Sport Mode in 2H all the time. In fact, I have only every used Sport Mode in 2H. I do not have Advanced 4x4, thought it was an unneeded cost option.
