I am putting together a list for an off road emergency kit. To start, I will be using my stock Badlands on easy to maybe trails with some moderate technical areas. Nothing crazy, just alpine trails with some rock areas or what not. The kind of thing you can still do with a AWD Subaru if you wanted to. I would mostly be sticking to fairly well traveled trails so I'm not worried about having to survive for days or anything.

My standard road kit that I keep in any car is:
  • Spare clothes/gloves/poncho both for work and inclement weather
  • Flashlight + batteries
  • A basic, cheap toolset (screwdrivers, a few end wrenches, a ratchet set, pliers, utility knife)
  • Hose repair (clamps and tape)
  • Jumper cables
  • Spare belt(s)
  • very basic first aid kit (mostly for bloody knuckles after mechanicing on the side of the road, hah)
  • trench shovel
  • kitty litter
In addition to my road emergency kit, I'm thinking for offroad I should have:
  • Some good recovery/tow straps
  • A battery boost/jumper (even though I'm getting a manual, it doesn't hurt to have it and I can use it in other vehicles too).
  • Tire plug kit
  • Air pump
  • a 2 ton bottle jack or two, maybe something better?
  • A better toolset?
  • A better first-aid kit?
  • An SOS device (my partner insists or she won't go with me, hah)
What kind of recovery/tow straps (and other recovery gear) would be a good place to start? Any recs on an air pump? What kind of jack (I would not rely on the stupid scissor jack off road). What else might you bring?

A towel.

Also, your comment on the battery booster - a great idea even in a manual, as you can't roll start these push button models

If you have an IPhone 14 or 15 you have the ability to use 911 via satellite.
It cost nothing for 2 years. I bought a bottle jack with Jackstand from Amazon, it also has a cradle for your axle. Works great.

Well, that's disappointing. I figured there would still be a way. Guess it's a battery booster for sure. Thanks for the info.

There's a thread around here where people have tried it. Officially from Ford - not supported and can damage your catalytic converter. The issue is that the fuel pump and auxiliaries won't turn on when the engine sparks (since it's a push button and not a key switch), people were able to get the engine to jump, but couldn't keep it running, and trying to just hit the Start button at the right time wasn't working. There was some discussion given to figuring out a way around that, but I don't know that anyone got it.

Food, water; maybe water filtration/disinfectant. Compass, emergency whistle, hat, sunglasses. Mosquito repellant, good walking shoes. Maps.

Flashlight, matches/lighter to make a fire.

Assume all of your electronic devices don't work and you might have to hike out of there.

The Milwaukee M18 air pump is recommended.

Toilet paper. For real. There's nothing like a long ride in 100° next to your buddy who just used newspaper he pulled off a barbwire fence.

You can also use it as tinder (the fire-making kind, not the app).

I'm sure there are a few threads on this topic already,.....
but this singular comment made this one worth the read.
LOL! Love it.
Keep it simple.

I like to keep a new 4'x8' blue tarp in my vehicle to lie on if getting under it. Will also catch fluids somewhat.
