By the numbers…

1. Don’t judge
2. Agree or Disagree: thread size/pitch as M6-1.0?
3. Anyone else have this problem?
4. Local dealership advised me to visit a body shop. I’m going to attempt to chase the threads w/ die and will post an update

On a related note, how strong is this attachment point? I've read some earlier comments mentioning the attachment pulling off, and maybe not actually welded to the window frame?

I plan to fab a cross bar that will attached to those points, for holding down kayaks/canoe and other stuff. Wouldn't want it coming loose on the highway.

Any update on this? Have 1 stripped stud on each side. There was a ton of paint on the stud. Used 4 M6 1mm. 2 of them worked fine, 2 stripped the stud about halfway down. Can't tighten the roof rack down, and I'm not risking it with only 1 stud on each side.

Took into my dealership, they told me they would call me once the parts came in. They said it probably wouldn't be covered by warranty, but it shouldn't be very expensive to fix.

When installing my roof rack I noticed than even when holding down the rack with some pressure (and with the modified plastic spacer in place under the metal plate of the rack ) there is quite a bit of pressure needed and a lot of "back pressure" fighting the start of threading. Next, there are only a few turns available to cinch and the studs feel "vulnerable" and about to strip. They clearly need to be longer or maybe aftermarket roof rack folks ( @JcrOffroad , others) need to provide a custom thinner spacer plate.

Looks like those plates will need to be welded along with lots of prep and paint afterwords. Doesn't look like a small job to me at all. Keep us posted.

when i installed my rack i noticed that the drivers side, the top stud took a but of elbow grease to get it started on the tread. no idea why, the rest were easy. but hopefully taking off the rack this summer, next season it wont be stripped or anything.

Are all of these "hard to tighten" comments on vehicles where the paint wasn't removed? Never leave paint on a fastener.
It does still sound like they are shite bolts.

Update and Takeaways:
- I was able to save the stud by chasing the threads w/ a M6 x 1.00mm die.
- I used a hex die and patiently turned by hand until I could tell I was committed. After that, used an adjustable wrench to turn the die and send her home.
- Success. I’ve got good threads. Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures and I’m not taking things apart to get any.
- I used red loctite on the rescued stud and blue on the other three. I also replaced the factory flange nuts w/ new ones from my local ACE.
- Thoughts: You really need a good die w/ a nice chamfer to accomplish this. The best tool for this job would have been a split, adjustable die. I would take the time to get one if doing this project again.

- I’m rooting for everyone else w/ this problem.

Glad you were able to make it work!

Just a heads up, your post above is combined with the quote. You'll want to move it below the quote marker.

Unfortunately the part is out of stock with ford with no sign of when it’ll be in. Going to try the die route before going to a body shop to try and weld a new stud on.

The die worked. Grabbed the last one at my local ace. Thank you so much, that just saved my vacation plans next month. Hand tightened until it grabbed, then slowly tightened with a adjustable wrench.
Heck yeah! Happy for you!
