Yes sir, I do appreciate the extra info, I am still new to be up front, so I appreciate your info. I do have an extra flat strap to extent the winch rope. I have been watching a few of the "more decent" YouTube channels trying to get some free education about the use and misuse of winches. I think it's good to see the good and bad, reminds of to NOT do the bad.
The flat snatch strap stretches. Beats nothing, but less than ideal for static recovery. The BIG issue is if something "breaks" in the system, that stored energy can cause major damage (which is why that flat strap works so well for snatching purposes). Synthetic rope has an extremely low stretch (versus steel cable, or recovery straps). ARB used to make a flat strap specific to winching (purple I think...)

Be careful of the Youtube...their goal is video views and happy sponsors, not necessarily accuracy :)

The BEST source for education/training is the International 4WD Trainers Association. I had a good handle on my recovery skills (trail and error) but did some training with them back around 2007/2008 and definitely picked up additional tips. There is no better learning method than hands on. I've taught a few intro101 classes too, but 60 minutes of me blathering to a crowd isn't much good without a few days of hands on.

I've never seen one that couldn't be knocked loose with a hitch pin or screwdriver through the hole in the pin or a pair of pliers and that wasn't stuck from being tightened down with a tool or not backed off before pulling on it.
Up in the Pacific -stoned- West there is just too much rust accumulation for 9+ months to leave shackles in place all year round... I have tried and now accept that "rust never sleeps".

You asked for opinions so…..

I think it’s dumb and is right up there with never used recovery boards, empty Rotopax, a shovel and a Hi-Lift jack riding around on rig full time getting ruined by the elements on a rig that’ll likely never have the need to use any of it.
this is đź’Ż

totally how I feel as well.
