I've never seen one that couldn't be knocked loose with a hitch pin or screwdriver through the hole in the pin or a pair of pliers and that wasn't stuck from being tightened down with a tool or not backed off before pulling on it.
Up in the Pacific -stoned- West there is just too much rust accumulation for 9+ months to leave shackles in place all year round... I have tried and now accept that "rust never sleeps".

You asked for opinions so…..

I think it’s dumb and is right up there with never used recovery boards, empty Rotopax, a shovel and a Hi-Lift jack riding around on rig full time getting ruined by the elements on a rig that’ll likely never have the need to use any of it.
