Here in the Sierra mountains at Tahoe we have gone with "triple peak" tires on the 4wd vehicles in the winter, but carry the least expensive California compliant "chains" which we have never installed. Never felt unsafe on any roads, regardless of several feet of snow and a bit of ice. But, we have not tested off road snow and mud, real chains would be nice there.
