Wonder if it has to do with sound? Maybe it going straight from air box causes more noise at some RPM and the turn before the other turbo muffles it.

That's actually a fairly good possibility. Ford has a history of making some goofy looking intakes trying to get the sound dialed in.

I would bet that an aftermarket intake would wake up the turbo sound a good bit.
