I had a check engine light pop up recently. P0451. My dealer's service dept says that the Fluid film covered a hole in a sensor and caused it to fail. Quoted $870+tax for repair and no warranty coverage. And to top it off the part is not even available.

Has this happened to anyone else before? Can anyone give me any insight or shed any light on this. I didn't have any idea that having Fluid Film professionally applied could cause something like this. I'm pretty bummed about it.

There are no Fluid Film applicators in my state, so I've considered doing it myself from aerosol cans. What sensor got coated? Hope you get it resolved to your satisfaction quickly!

What sensor has a hole in it that failed? Evap vent?

I have found that Fluid Film will swell rubber. Have had door seals expand all over the place when they got hit at the drains. Funky smell too but not your issue.

I would ask for more info. If fluid film sprayed from underneath can do that, then could mud have reached the same spot?

Ask what sensor has a hole? then splash some mud on that part and go to a different dealer and try again.

They were supposed to give me a part number but I don't see it on the paperwork. I'll have to call them.

Hey, don't leave us hanging...

You said... Fluid film covered a hole in a sensor and caused it to fail.

What hole, Location, Sensor, etc... PICs?

Thank you

Code refers to: Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor/Switch

Located on top of the gas tank. Tank has to be dropped to get to it.

If you have to pay, then just drive with the error code. I have an evaporative emission sensor failure that triggered my CEL on my Jeep over a decade ago. I wish the sensor was as durable as the CEL light on my dash. Been burning bright for 12 years and counting.

I'm in Pa and would not pass inspection with a light on.

wow! your fluid film application crew was certainly thorough.

did they disassemble everything from the frame, and then apply the fluid film?

time to get that fluid film application crew involved in getting this fixed !

Short of them already dropping the tank, how can they verify that the sensor was taken out by Fluid Film? Being above the tank, I would think that it would be fairly well protected. Sounds like they see Fluid Film on other surfaces and extrapolated that it must be on the sensor and blocking the hole.

This is the correct answer. You didn't do the work, the film crew did. They are ultimately liable.

Have you checked with the fluid film installer? If they sprayed over something they shouldn't have are they liable?

This sounds like some serious dealer bs to me. Get more info from the dealer and contact the fluid film installer and ask them about making a claim. Then let them two fight it out.
