Has anyone seen a snorkel kit that will fit a raptor? ( I suppose I'd need to either put my doors or a swimsuit on )

Snorkels are such fake overlanding accessories.

They certainly do not increase water fording depths. That is governed by drivetrain vents and/or alternator.

I've seen many claims they will keep ones air filter cleaner in dusty conditions, but I highly doubt this is true and of course no one can provide a shred of proof of that.

:) it was just a passing thought..... I used to have an FJ40 that had the diff and distributor vent lines connected to the air box etc.... with all the rain and flooding we've had lately it got me thinking....

Man, for everyone that says don’t do it? Where do you wheel??? West coast desert?
Anyone been to the ozarks? I ask because so many people on here are snorkel haters. Do you guys actually know what happens when your engine get water in it??

I know what you’re going to say, well the alternator is gonna go first.. who cares?? That like 300 bucks and 30 mins. Blown engine is probably 25k. Snorkels are not designed to make your car a submarine, it’s to keep water out of the engine. I want to drive home after wheeling not get a tow. Full stop, rant over

Snorkels are a misunderstood accessory, if you look at their use around the world you’ll see that they are vastly more utilized in dry dusty environments. They are made higher to get above as much of dust and debris as possible, as a side benefit, they also raise it above water when you ford a deeper depth. I have had snorkels on Jeeps, and not had snorkels on Jeeps, modern engines have a lot of sensitive connections and electronics that fording water is a hazard to. I am not planning on fording any water that would need a higher air intake then stock, because there is just too much that could get water damage besides hydrolocking the engine. If someone wants a snorkel and puts it on for looks or function, good for them.

This is so wrong! First off, if you buy a pre filter, like the Sy-Klone, you will increase your air filters service life. Secondly, if you do have to cross a water crossing that is a little too deep for a stock air intake system, you aren't going to hydro lock your engine! Yes, you do need to extend your diffs, tranny, and transfer case vents as I will be doing soon. Got the kit, just haven't installed yet and you do need to seal your airbox too!

Yes, most people that buy snorkels are just buying them to look the part, but they do have a real function!

Sorry not sold. If you like the look do it. I wheel in dusty muddy environments. We get both! Often at the same time. Check your filter regularly and if you need the air intake higher they make larger tires for a reason.in the mean time, you can get color matched snorkels.

Look, I am not trying to convince you to get a snorkel, just putting out the real reason why people (should) need them. I don’t know what evidence you would need to prove they are beneficial, but as a worldly traveler, I have seen that they do in fact keep the air filter from getting clogged up as quickly and with a prefilter they work even better.

A filter before a filter of course helps. I guess I am just basing it off of my 38 years of off roading and seeing some of these real worlds in SE TN. Mostly they catch trees around here. most of what I have seen use a non-factory filter. I have seen no empirical data from any manufacture in a scientifically controlled test to prove any of what you are suggesting. That being said, if it uses a better bigger filter, there is your benefit, not the roof tube. I have seen Unimog's in Dakar with these, but I have seen no baja racers running them. As for water, I guess overspray from high-speed water might be helped as the stock box faces forward on the opening. If, however, you are fording deeper water, you have some important electronics and a lot of vent tubes getting swamped way before you hit the stock box opening. For me on the bronco application it is a gimmick and a money waste. However, as I stated before, if you like it do it. I just would need some actual data, not the sales pitch.

I respectfully disagree.

What percentage of folks running snorkels FIRST take care of all relevant vents and electronics? Perhaps you will break the mold here and be the one guy that does  . I guess good on you if you can significantly increase the true/safe water fording depth of your rig. The Raptor and Everglades and 37"/36.4" respectively so fully covering ones tire. Do you need better than this? Anyway, the typical lack of other prep is precisely why I said "they don't work". It was shorthand for they don't work for how 99.5% of people install them. With all of the prior discussion here that should have been mostly obvious.

Now once you do all of the prep work to increase water fording depth you have two quite large barriers left.
  1. Alternators: Despite a deflector added on some year/models of Bronco, there have been multiple reports of deep(ish) fording ruining alternators. Do you have a plan to essentially water proof yours?
  2. Cabin water intrusion. If you are going to this depth, you should probably be prepared to completely swamp the inside of your rig.
So, once you have breathers, electronics, sealed airbox, alternator waterprooofing and have no problems from a swamped interior AND you finally are pushing the water depth or fording wave into your factory airbox, I can see some potential benefit of a (fully sealed) snorkel system.

Until then, again, I disagree.

Lastly...

Adding a secondary filter to an existing filter does not in itself prove that a snorkel is actually functional. You could simply wrap your existing filter with a fitted/disposable type of cover, which is a real product. If you are willing to sacrifice having a lot more flow restriction in your intake system, then sure, that can lead to better filtration.

Holy Hannah! Here we go again! Another "what use is a snorkel thread". 😴😴😴😴😴😴

A better thread would be "why the f you care what somebody else puts on their rig". Now *THAT'S* a thread I'd grab the popcorn over.

There is no end to the useless and/or downright fugly things I've seen screwed, glued or tattooed on you people's Broncos over the years. What the hell do I care? Not one damn bit.

The one argument that ends all other arguments: "because it's my rig and I want it". Mic drop. They are right. You are wrong. End of discussion.

Bringing it back on topic: I've never seen a snorkel for Braptors. I suspect the market is just not there to justify the R&D expense. Too bad. Done right, it would be a cool mod (in my biased opinion)
