2021 2.3 Turbo failure 350 miles outside of warranty

Questions about oil, oil change interval, and if you beat on it consistently. That seems fairly premature. Did they say cause of turbo death?

If you want to go down the oil rabbit hole, Bob is the oil guy forum will take there.

Some mechanics are recommending 3-4 k mile oil changes for turbo engines with a high quality FS oil.

Check out LKQ they have low mileage turbos very cheap. A shop should be able to change it out in a couple hours with how accessible everything is. Sure it's used but it could save you multiple thousands of dollars between parts and labor.

The dealer should be able to do SOMETHING for you. What, I don't know, but they've got some leeway.

The last used truck I bought (been a WHILE), came with a 3k mile parts warranty. It was a 6.0 PSD. Turbo unison ring locked up, took them a week to diagnose, wanted me to pay full price despite being like 100 miles outside that warranty. They ended up offering to split the cost 50/50, which I thought was fair, considering that kind of failure shows no signs until it happens, but takes a long time for enough soot to build up to cause it.

And yes, they did show me the turbo, torn down. It was absolutely CAKED in soot, No way I could have generated that much in 3k miles. When I pulled the drop-in bedliner out a month later, I learned the PO had used the truck for his landscaping business, which means high idle hours and low speed, short trips...will absolutely plug up a turbo. Turbos like to see heat to stay clean.

Yes. You have to ask.

I got most of my maverick's axles paid for at like 62k. Those are known issues.

I think that's just a generic message. Ford dealers don't rebuild turbos

I agree. Even though parts are available, everyone including Caterpillar (who I work for) dealerships buy re-manufactured or new. We used to rebuild them here all the time. If the impeller didn’t contact the housing long enough to damage either, it’s just replacing bearings and seals on the shaft.
