This one’s a bit of a cheat, these were two separate trips, both just quick overnighters rather than an epic, multi-day expedition into the unknown. Honestly though, I’m starting to love these little overnight escapes. Luckily, Southern California is full of opportunities for quick getaways.

The most recent outing was to Trona Pinnacles and boy was it hot. 115 degrees during the day. I left LA around 1 and got there around 4 thinking it would have cooled down to 90s but no. It took till about 8:30 for things to finally cool down. Once there it's a really easy ride to the site if you don't do what I did and go the wrong side of the train track and then attempt to cross the tracks at an inopportune place and then break your mud laps in the process. On the second attempt I rubbed my two brain cells together and made it over.

Not many people out and about when it's 115. But, I did run into another bronco!!

After sunset when things finally cooled down I opened up the top and went into the wash to mess around when behind one of the mountains came the most amazing moon rising I've ever seen in my life. The photos don't do it justice, but It really transfixed me for quite a while.

My original plan was to head back home after watching the sunset, but I was really tired and thought it better to just sleep there. Fortunately all I needed was my handy Meraki bronco hammock with the top open for a cool and windy 76 degree evening.

Six months prior to this on cooler days I went out to Death Valley for a quick overnighter as well. I took Mengel Pass and did the park loop.

Shortly after this picture I came up on a pretty big step up on some rocks and managed to get the bronco a little stuck with tires spinning no movement. A bit of panic set it in as I pondered what to do next, but lowering the tire pressure even more down to 18 took care of it.

Out of the canyon and into the valley.

Cheers. One final note, even thought it was 115 and I had the bronco in Baja mode I didn't have any overheating issues. Maybe I wasn't on it hard enough but trans temps and oil temps stayed rock solid which was a surprise to me.

Did you take the trail from Ubehebe Crater to Teakettle junction? I went through there when coming back from Arizona Strip last year. That trial from Ubehebe Crater to near Teakettle junction was very rough. It had just been dozed and big chunks of loose lava rock rock left as the road surface. I had never seen it like that before. I am wondering if has improved.

I camped up by White Top mountain and then took the trail on down past Hunter mountain to 190 to get back home.

It looks like you had a good time.

Tbh I can't remember if I did or not lol. But I did take "A" trail to kettle. I also remember taking a trail from the crater, there was only 1 form what I remember.

I'm really starting to love Death Valley and surrounding area. Eerily quiet and very few visitors compared to other national parks. Really enjoyed it. I'll have to check out White Top Mountain. I'm making Death Valley a local spot from now on since it's only about 3 hours from me. Little weekend getaways to explore the entire area.

I Love your photos. Thank you for taking the time to edit them and post them. Last time I was at the trona pinnacles I must have been 8 or 9 and I did not remember much about them. I have not been back because my 8 year old self was not impressed. But seeing this I will put it on my list. It is only a 3 hour drive for me so I have no excuse.

On your Meraki bronco hammock, I did a search and found this https://www.bronco6g.com/forum/threads/hammock-camping-in-your-bronco.89027/
But it only shows the 4 door. How does it work in a two door? Do you have some photos you could share?

Wow that’s hot…. You need altitude. Next time try Telescope Peak and Panamint Mountain…

I think the highest point you can drive to in Death Valley NP is Mahogany Flat campground at 8K', but it has limited space. I found that pleasant weather on Telescope Peak (11K) meant hot weather at Wildrose Campground (4K).

I typically go in cooler months and it makes a big difference. However, in spring it can be hot on the valley floor at the same time that a few high-up roads are still closed by snow and ice. That's the western U.S. for you, in any state.

… can be very very cold…. Got an invite to ride on a DV trip, next day told is up in the mountains and to bring cool weather gear.

After a cold night pulled a water bottle out of colder to use for coffee, before I got things ready and grab the bottle it had started to freeze ice forming..

He offerers a two door version. Just reach out, I think they are still on this forum not sure tbh. I'm not affiliated, but it is a quality product and made in the USA.

This is what it looks like when I'm in it.

Now I'll admit it is a pain to get in there when you have to get into a sleeping bag AND have an electric heating pad underneath. On this last trip I didn't have to do any of that because it was a nice 75 degrees out.

Once settled in it's very comfortable.

I'm also 5' 7" anyone longer just aint gonna work for the two door model. And make sure to pee before you get in there, you aren't gonna like having to get up and out of that thing and get back in it at 3am from your sleeping bag.
