This one’s a bit of a cheat, these were two separate trips, both just quick overnighters rather than an epic, multi-day expedition into the unknown. Honestly though, I’m starting to love these little overnight escapes. Luckily, Southern California is full of opportunities for quick getaways.
The most recent outing was to Trona Pinnacles and boy was it hot. 115 degrees during the day. I left LA around 1 and got there around 4 thinking it would have cooled down to 90s but no. It took till about 8:30 for things to finally cool down. Once there it's a really easy ride to the site if you don't do what I did and go the wrong side of the train track and then attempt to cross the tracks at an inopportune place and then break your mud laps in the process. On the second attempt I rubbed my two brain cells together and made it over.
Not many people out and about when it's 115. But, I did run into another bronco!!
After sunset when things finally cooled down I opened up the top and went into the wash to mess around when behind one of the mountains came the most amazing moon rising I've ever seen in my life. The photos don't do it justice, but It really transfixed me for quite a while.
My original plan was to head back home after watching the sunset, but I was really tired and thought it better to just sleep there. Fortunately all I needed was my handy Meraki bronco hammock with the top open for a cool and windy 76 degree evening.
Up early to catch the sunrise
Six months prior to this on cooler days I went out to Death Valley for a quick overnighter as well. I took Mengel Pass and did the park loop.
Shortly after this picture I came up on a pretty big step up on some rocks and managed to get the bronco a little stuck with tires spinning no movement. A bit of panic set it in as I pondered what to do next, but lowering the tire pressure even more down to 18 took care of it.
Out of the canyon and into the valley.
Cheers. One final note, even thought it was 115 and I had the bronco in Baja mode I didn't have any overheating issues. Maybe I wasn't on it hard enough but trans temps and oil temps stayed rock solid which was a surprise to me.
