Honestly, giving the Bronco and the Raptor 10R80 transmissions would be far more useful than the 3.5.
Have there been any transmission failures yet?

Why? There are more issues with the 10R80 compared to the 10R60.

I had no idea there were failures. I only really am interested in the Bronco scene but I remember a ton of discourse when it was found out we had the 60. Had to do with the torque limits or something I remember.

Wasn't a ton of discourse. it was literally one dude that would spawn a new thread about every week or so about the MASSIVE GIANT GAPING HOLE THAT WAS THE 10R60, and that Ford (and the internet) should listen to him. Pretty sure he moved on to a Nissan or Dodge forum to complain about reliability over there...

However, every Ford that a friend or relative has had, has failed a transmission on them. I am happy to say that my extended warranty might have been a useless purchase, as mine has been reliable and exactly the right kind of boring.

Yeah the 10R60 has a maximum torque rating of 600Nm, while the 10R80 800Nm.

Torque output of the 2.7L is what… 550ish Nm I think?? And the 3.0L is probably close to 580-590 Nm on premium fuel. So the 10R60 is perfectly adequate, especially for a non-towing vehicle like the Bronco.

For some reason some people were upset Ford didn’t include the 10R80 in the Bronco. One dude in particular was so incredibly upset that he complained about it every week before eventually getting banned. (And then went to the Bronco Nation forums to do the same thing until he banned there as well.)

It's all relative... One is certainly going to feel 450 vs. 418.

Engine torque is a pretty significant factor limiting towing and towing capacity is a major selling point. The 3.5 has 16% more torque than the 3.0.
The 2.7 will tow better than any V-8 from any manufacturer. It is a no way a limiting factor when it comes to the Bronco towing capacity. I have a big block V8 in an F-250 and I have a 2.7 in an F150 and the 2.7 will walk away from my V-8 when towing the same trailer.

Heavy towing is harder on transmissions than pretty much anything. The 10R60 transmissions are plenty good in any Bronco except the odd case of someone towing way above capacity for extended periods. And if one knows how to protect the transmission by manually shifting it, even overloaded they are adequate. Cooling capacity may be subject though.

I remember at some show, the program manager was cornered on this topic and his response was:

- "we couldn't properly fit the 3.5 and we didn't like the torque curve on the Coyote"

Now, how much of that statement was just to support their product marketing decisions is anyone's guess.

Working with the company who tuned that Explorer right now. Should have my Raptor tuned in a couple of weeks. I'm pumped.

I didn't state the 2.7 is poor at towing or anything about it relative to any other motor.

But again, a very general principal is that a higher torque motor is good for and generally will contribute to an increased towing capacity.

I find it funny too. I have F150s with all three engines, and while the coyote sounds good, either Ecoboost outperforms it in every category, especially when towing. I also have heavy duty trucks with big block V8s and they can get the job done, but they are screaming while the 2.7 is leisurely towing the same loads. My brother also has a low mileage super duty with the 6.0 power stroke diesel and we use his truck sometimes and sometimes I use my half ton with the 2.7 in it to tow our tractor on a trailer up the hill to our property. The combination weighs about 7000 pounds. My 2.7 will accelerate up the last hill before the property entrance on the highway and his diesel will only maintain speed. LOL……

Call me old, but I can't imagine a 3.5 in a Bronco. I feel like you could literally fly if you put one in a Bronco, 2 door or 4 door. I've had the 3.5 in my past 2 F150's and that engine will make those trucks move! Would be fun in a Bronco, but I'd fear for my life!
