I’m a conductor for a short line railroad. We get auto trains from Union Pacific and “spot” them for unloading at the Rail USA UP auto facility in Midwest City OKLA. We get all kinds but tons of Broncos. First off the Bronco train goes from MWC to the Ford loading facility. I see cars leave on Monday and the same car back on Friday, that quickly. When we spot the cars unloading starts immediately guys are standing and waiting. They unload them same day, as many as 88 train cars and we take empty’s out the following day back to UP.

A lesson on auto rack cars. There’s no first on first off. When we get the train we walk it, look inside to see which way cars inside are facing as they have to be driven off not backed. If they’re all mixed we switch cars to get 5 facing one way. When we spot them they need to be 38”-46” door to door to allow ramps to work between the cars. A car at the front may end up at the back but the whole thing is unloaded in less than 8 hours so doesn’t really matter.

Generally the auto carrier trucks start showing the following day. There has been a custom ordered bronco sitting for over a week and hasn’t moved no idea the issue. The only thing I’ve seen delay things is a train car billing issue and kids stole keys out of vehicles. They are all shipped unlocked with keys inside and the rail car can be opened with a pair of pliers. That’s it on my end hope it helps!

Oh I don’t unload, I wish I did though! If it was bought around OKC it was likely on my train though!

Mine is at the Kirby TX Yard since Thursday awaiting transport. I assume it's the same process. Thanks for the insight!

i have notes for where my bronco went before it finally headed west to colorado. appeared to ping pong around the great lakes area for a few days. wayne, mi to walbridge, oh, over to chicago, then gibson, indiana, lombard, rochelle, and finally 7 days later hit a main line and rolled through iowa. from there it seemed pretty quick. very few main line delays. waited in kimbal nebraska for 12 hours and then all of a sudden was in denver at next check.

fun to track but you can pull your hair out doing it haha.

Pretty cool post. Ever since I started hearing about the delays in shipping I had always hoped to find a "How it's Made" style video of the auto shipping process. This comes close.

Thank you for sharing the pictures too. I live in Tulsa, so I have no doubt that it'll come through your yard. Hopefully soon!

@rsissom918 you ever curse about DRW super duty chassis cabs with dump bodies on them? Seems like the rail guys hate the 96" wide stuff.

I tracked mine every hour or so while the train was moving from MI to VA. When it got close to Va, it was in and out of Va 4 times that I was able to track. Wish I had Written it down when I tracked it. Would have been cool to map it. Mine sat at the Railyard for 19 days before they brought it to the dealer. This is the ONLY disadvantage of using a small rural dealer. LOVE my dealer!!! Dec 23, 2021, BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT EVER!!!
I’m a conductor for a short line railroad.
THANK YOU!!! Always neat to see how stuff works.

Appreciate the post OP - mine should be loaded any day now (if not already) to leave MI and head west. Hope I'm able to follow its progress. I've been a complete psychopath since it got built 4 weeks ago. ETA Dec 30-Jan 5. I'm starting to doubt it'll be in that window. Better late than never.
