Drive during your normal "awake" hours to keep your circadian rhythm normal. Assuming you're typically awake during the day and asleep at night, I would get an early jump in the morning. Start driving before the sun comes up, and be done with your drive near sunset. Last thing you want to do is drive at night fighting sleep. Additionally, shift your jump off time/breaks to not hit major city's at rush hour. For a 12 hour drive I would take a quick 10-15 minute break/fuel stop every 3-4 hours, but that's me. I like to get out, stretch, get coffee and get back in. In the end I would rather add an additional hour to my 12 hour drive for the short breaks to keep fresh.

Good luck!

Long story short, going to Jeep beach but leaving a day earlier than planned as my buddy from SoCar is joining us, so Im picking him up. Figure Id leave around 4-5am, then other than gas and food, should be there by the evening.

Never did 12hrs though, longest was 8-10 and it was with my ex, though she was either sleeping or being quiet.

Any tips and pointers from those who’ve done it before, as I essentially over 2 months to prepare? Thanks in advance
Man, I remember one year driving for 17hrs, from DFW to Larramie, WY. You just go, look at the scenery, listen to your jams. I always like to go early, because when the sun goes down, I get sleepy ;-)

If you know your route already I'd share it with someone and tell them when you expect to reach your destination

I remember driving from Almaghetto nm to Denver, you never forget the vastness and beauty of it all.

So excited, also tempted to get gerry cans for shits and giggles as well, find that strap kit for them as well

Comedy radio and red bull. 12 hours is not a big deal. You’re awake longer than that on a normal day. Don’t stress/psych yourself out. Ditto the comments about regular pit stops. Do jumping jacks if need be. You’ll be fine! Also anything to keep your eyes from getting tired while focusing on far sight… so if that means you use driving glasses, don’t forget them!

Did a solo 3,800 mile road trip last month. Why? Just bored and I like driving. Drove from Dallas to CA, up the coast to San Jose, and back to Dallas. Think the longest leg was about 15-16 hours. As mentioned here, RedBull, snacks (for me sour candy as it kind of jolts you awake), gum (so your constantly chewing something), water, and something for the background. I downloaded episodes of The Office for background noise. Also, roll down the windows every so often (recirculate some fresh air in) and get out and stretch every couple hours or so. It'll go by quicker than you think.

Make sure you have a couple of good playlists set up. Pack sandwiches in a mini cooler on the passenger seat.
