I was hoping someone was gonna come back and say this was an absolute game changer….but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Probs better off just buying that army surplus shovel and a decent hatchet.

with the 2 door im always looking for a small alternative to things to save in space

I have one: I'll do a lengthy review lol...

I have an army surplus style $30 shovel that i've been using for 8 years. It still works, its small, packs easy and is great for digging little holes and has a pickaxe extension I can flip out to loosen up dirt. It's been my dedicated poop shovel for years. That being said, I discovered its limitation quickly in that it sucked as a sand and snow shovel.

Now Grant, the owner of Rockworx is my friend, super cool dude with a lot of older, cool vehicles. He has a great ecosystem going with his product and his shovel won some kind of SEMA award... Good for him I say!

Now to support him, I purchased the shovel (wow, an influencer that believes in supporting and not just consuming lol).

To start, great build quality, I'm told I can turn it into a stool/chair thing and also a pickaxe. I'll admit I've only ever used the shovel functions.

I give it 10/10 for style points: This shovel looks great for a uhhhh, well shovel. Again, huge cool factor! Great for photo ops and looking cool at the mall with it strapped to the side of your rig. It has a Molle mount adaptor thing sold separately to allow for maximum cool factor.

Now for using it... For the life of me, I can't figure out how to make it into a seat, I know it can do it but it just seems a bit complicated to get there and well, its a shovel... I'd rather take 30 seconds to pop open my camp chair then spend 5 minutes figuring out the shovel into chair function. While writing this review, I went to see about converting it to a pickaxe too and again, complicated and hard to figure out for the first time. I got it mostly there but gave up after about 5 minutes of trying to figure out the pins to lock the blade into place. It is nice that no tools are required to change it up from shovel to something else.

The quality of materials is fantastic! It's seen some hard use and continues to look great. I will say this shovel shines as a snow shovel or a sand shovel vs a dirt shovel. Its a spade style and doesnt dig holes well. It's for scooping snow/sand to recover yourself. If you've ever used one of those little army shovels for recovering yourself like I have, you'll know it can suck. Not this one, it makes quick work of snow, ice, sand, people's legs that get in the way... etc. The edge of the shovel also doesn't like asphalt lol... Note the scrapes on the blade.

I would say the shining point of this shovel is the build quality, the collar, the locks, the pins, the extending handle. All extremely well built, easy to manipulate. I have a bad back (arthitris and buldging disks at 30 YO.... YEA!) I don't like getting down and dirty under the vehicle to dig. The extending handle literally turns this thing into a full-size shovel! Having purchased cheap extending shovels before, they were all flimsy, broke easy and just felt cheap. Not the Rockworx shovel, it actually feels like a solid handle when extended. You can place it in multiple positions using the internally threaded handle. No more painful bending down for me! Honestly, I love this feature the most!

Soooo yea, is it worth $300? Based on build quality and how well it works, I can see after a small profit that it is a realistic price for what it is... I can't stress the build quality enough, its well built. Are most people gonna pay $300 for a shovel? Probably not but that's ok. Is it a bit complicated to use some of its extra features? Yes, but its primary purpose is shovel and it does that well.

Excellent review and great pictures. I was mostly considering it for the hatchet and chair but based on what you’re saying it doesn’t sound like it’s worth the hassle from the little room I would save. I already have a little SOG shovel for using to dump shit on a campfire to put it out. And a very small backpacking chair that folds up to about 12” long and 5” wide. And a small axe. Come to think of it I’d hate to have to convert the chair to the axe to use it and then have to convert it back to a chair when I was done,

It looks fantastic though. Really appreciate the info.

That is some NASA-level engineering for a poop shovel.
I wouldn’t rate it as a poop shovel lol. Per my comment, it’s not great for hole digging and much better for snow/sand recoveries when you’re buried.

You are right - sounds more like Military-Level than NASA-level

Servicemembers ask for Poop Shovel

R&D begins

Upper tier officers and politicians start adding additional requirements

End up with an over engineered item thats great for all this other stuff, costs a fortune, but can barely do what the original request was for in the first place

I have the Gerber E-Tool, picked it up as Army surplus for $25, it's super solid.

I saw these at a show and they were on sale- nearly pulled the trigger for the cool factor. It was very well built and the person selling them converted it like a kids transformer toy from the 80s.

The fact that the shovel is really not good for any digging is a problem. This is definitely a sand/snow piece of gear. The chair mode- not comfortable and not sturdy- but I am fat so take it for what it is!

A buddy of mine has one, swears by it. He overlands all the time, and he uses the "insert your word here" out of it. He uses as a seat, he uses the pick-axe, axe, hell, I think he has used every feature. When he is done, he uses it in the trail hitch as a step-up for his tent and such.

So, I guess for people who need it for all the functions, it's worth it. Best part for him, it matches his RIG colour!

I have one. You really have to take some time to learn how to put it together in the configurations you want. Once you do, it's definitely a space saver. But you can't just throw it on there and then figure out how to configure what you want the moment you need it. The build quality and engineering is top notch. I mean - it's a beautiful piece of work and thought. Take some time putting it together like the infantry guys put together their rifle and you'll love it.
