I went to one of the Think Ford First events a few months ago. Got a carabineer, the hat, and 11,000 ford pass reward points.

The female holes are typically not pre-tapped. The "bolts" are thread forming screws. The form the threads as they are installed.
Thanks for the info, Bill.

Would that explain the markings on the threads in the enlarged photo that I posted?

Any other feedback or clarification you can provide to the overall topic would be appreciated. Thanks.

100% does. The wear on the lead thread is the thread forming screw getting a "bite" into the untapped hole. If you look closely at the screw body it is likely not round. They are actually trilobular (triangle) shaped. That shape is what forms the threads.

One of the benefits of a forum like this is the ability to crowd-source information gathering and debate possible interpretations for the benefit of the entire group. Sometimes it involves speculation and gets a little messy, but hopefully it generates some useful information as the thread unfolds.

Any other information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for confirming the part number (W721180-S450B) and size (M8x30), Phil.

Just for clarity, is that part HB3 on the diagram?

Alright, the moment you've been waiting for...
The little bolt appears to be M6x20
The bigger bolt appears to be M8x30

Excellent, can you try next to get an accurate length measurement of the thread section of the bolts, in mm if possible?

Bottom of the head to the end of the threads.

Good to hear. Two very common automotive thread pitch/sizes.
Allows for stainless fasteners as well after the fact, which I am a huge fan of.

Be careful swapping in stainless. The stainless may be substantially weaker than the steel parts. Unless you know the material and heat treat on these bolts I wouldn't do it unless the application is purely cosmetic (trim parts, etc). If the application is anything remotely structural or safety related don't do it. 300-series (302-304 typical fastener materials) also known as 18-8 has a strength that roughly equates to a Grade-5 bolt strength. The "Bronco" bolts potentially could have a strength rating at a Grade-8 or higher level. Without either doing destructive testing or having the manufacturer's print you won't know. Also very possible that the Bronco bolts are simply low carbon steel in which case the stainless would be a strength upgrade.
