I did a very little bit of AI work in school in the 90s. Back then it was mostly heuristic algorithm projects in C and LISP, but our class teams did some pretty interesting theoretical projects. What I remember most was that in almost every simulation, within the first few steps the systems always recommended removing humans from the processes as we were decidedly the least reliable components. It was also pretty clear that many of the constructs we hold dear (life, liberty, equality, justice, freedom, etc.) aren't considered very important to purely logical systems. And trying to program them in as artificial priorities always seemed to get them progressively backed out in successive passes. As one prof quipped, "If we build a machine and tell it to 'make a perfect world'', the first thing it will do is kill us and then make more machines."

I wanted something for our new www.obxBroncoRentals.com site. Funny how Ford came up with the Outer Banks version and AI made the Corolla version without being asked.
