Bronco-Inspired Custom Home-Built Teardrop Trailer and Her Maiden Voyage

Hello B6G - I got my 2021 Wildtrak back in November of 2021. We love exploring the outdoors and camping so about 3 months after getting the Bronco, my son and I decided to build a teardrop trailer. My son’s an engineer and we’re both pretty handy so we decided to build instead of buy. Unfortunately we both have day jobs so it took us about a year, weekends and odd nights. But it was blast and something we enjoyed doing together. Now we get to use it. Below are the specs and what we did and some pics.

Empty weight is 1400 lbs. Cabin is 9.5’ x 5’, total length with tongue and hitch is 12.5’. Has queen mattress which folds to couch, roof rack, awning, solar, inverter, lights/fan, full electric and galley area with fridge, water and storage.

So, for our maiden voyage we spent 5 days and 4 nights in the Monongahela, Shenandoah, Washington and Jefferson National Forests in WV and VA. This trip was awesome and we truly field tested this thing. We did 700 miles total and at least 300 were off road trails and Forest roads. This thing did amazing and we bounced the crap out of it. We explored, climbed fire towers, went in caves, hiked and climbed mountains and camped in only dispersed back country areas. We are now planning our next trip, hopefully out west.

Here I am barely able to tie my own shoes, and you're building a kick ass trailer. Looks amazing - I'm jealous and I hate you (kidding).

Enjoy your many journey's in it! It's one thing to buy a trailer and enjoy it. It's another to build one with family and enjoy it - Just means a whole lot more, I'm sure.

Holy crap! Well done! That’s been my plan all along to do a teardrop. So I can go adventuring with my dogs. Not building my own though. Time vs money for me, I would rather just order one.

Thanks, yes building with my son was such a blast, we made some great memories building it and more to come as we use it.

Yeah, the table and compartment under the cabin is great. We finished the frame and then we saw one online with the pop up pontoon boat style table and we said, we gotta add that, so we did.

Thank you. It was a ton of fun to do, from planning to buying to screwing up and having to adjust, but it all worked out better than expected. Some basic skills and tools (and many runs to Home Depot) helped us get there. And checking out other teardrops and made this doable. many of the teardrop companies and builders post videos of their build processes and we were able to see how they did some of their builds.
