The problem is "the actions of few dictates policy to all".

Probably a Jeep owner…
Didn’t read the article did you, it even referenced the rock being the size of a Bronco. Want to guess what group they were with a couple weeks ago that had a gathering at Moab?

And once again people can’t just leave shat only. 🤬

Kids do dumb things, at least the family took responsibility and offered to pay fines.
Only because they were called out. And BS on their "young daughter". There is another pic floating around that shows the family and the daughter is at least a teenager. And its not like that took just a second to write. Good on the Bronco club for covering for them and helping clean it up. This is the kind of stuff that could cost them their event permit in the future.

ETA: fines are good, but they should be required to do trail cleanups as well

The family said...

“We have a young daughter who was using something she found on the ground to write on the rock,” the family member wrote over Facebook Messenger. “We assumed it was a chalk like substance and had no idea that she was causing any damage or we would’ve put a stop to it.”

Adding,

"But then we figured, hey, the damage is already done! Why not let her finish the job, and then we can take some cool pictures and post them on social media like we didn't do anything wrong!"

🙄

This is just pure ignorance. The family's comment was "they thought their daughter used a chalk like material otherwise they would have put a stop to it". Like chalk is supposed to be better. That shows no accountability on their part and ignorance to think any vandalism is ok. Also they likely stepped forward because they were already exposed in social media and was just doing damage control.

My dad would have whipped my ass. Then he would have made me clean it up and if I said anything while cleaning it he would have whipped me again.

Guess what? I've never done anything like that... Just the knowledge of what would happen and my parents sense to teach us kids how to treat our National Treasures was needed.

Some people think stacking rocks is defacing trails, some people don't. I placed a small memorial Rock for my dead mother on a beautiful trail once, and got flack for it.

I'm not saying what they did was ok, But it's not crucifying material. They didn't throw their trash out on the trail, they didn't dump a bunch of oil out on the trail, They didn't leave huge rubber tire mark on a rock.

Who here hasn't picked up a rock and written something in their life at some point?

Based on all the reactions before I looked at the article I expected them to spray painted a big FU Jeeps or something.
