I visited a shop today to get a price on adding a heritage style strip to my 2 door.

My mind was so blown by the price, I’m thinking about having a go at it myself.

I’ve got some skills and a decent eye. Can I do this? Any tips or guidance?

Lots of how tos on applying vinyl graphics

I don’t mind small things, but anything too large and it quickly exceeds my skill level

Not exceeding difficult but requires a lot of patience

I’m thinking the tricky part is keeping it straight. I’m also thinking the cove in the fender, door and quarter panel should help with that.

Any variance from straight is going to stick out like a sore thumb if you view the stripe from the front or back.

Not hard to do it straight

Measure it and use painters tape just below or above where it lays

It’s a 15 min job per side once prep work is done

First side you’ll struggle a bit. 2nd side will go on easy

Oh - I thought you were talking about hitting a narrow trail and having Branches/rocks/thorny bushes add 'flair' to your ride. Lots of people wear these 'stripes' like a badge of pride.

I came here to say exactly this. My experience matches this description almost word for word. My previous vinyl application skills is bumper stickers.
Now, my vehicle already had a stealth wrap, and I feel that applying vinyl on vinyl made it a little easier and forgiving process.
The driver side seen here was actually my first side. I did starboard second.

Only I can really see the crooked parts and actually it makes me kind of proud that I know I did it myself!

Painter’s Tape saved my life (at least my wallet.). Huge game changer!

As much as I'd like to support those that like to do their own upgrades, this is not one of those times. Vinyl graphics aren't necessarily (but often are) nerve-wracking to apply, particularly when they run the entire side of of the vehicle. Although I applaud those that have installed them with confidence and success, I've also seen the installation ruined by a lack of finesse or experience. Paying a qualified installer puts the burden (and stress) of accuracy on someone better equipped to to the job (and is likely to require much less time). My opinion is that the money (about 1/2 hour worth of labor) is well spent. How much would I pay for that labor? I believe its worth between $100-$150. If they want more than that look around for someone else with the necessary experience. Often times, window tint installers can get it done.

Agreed. I was okay with losing the stripes and $$$ if I messed up, and I wouldn’t think of wrapping my entire vehicle myself.

Know your limitations, know the full cost (especially DIY), and there’s no shame in having a pro help you achieve the look you want.

650 is pretty strong. Watching it done by a friend/client....lots of alcohol to clean, painters tape for straight, water spray, a plastic 'knife' for clearing moisture out, relax, there will be bubbles which will dissipate since vinyl breathes...I wouldn't do it.

Auto Paint supply stores have tape, but regular blue painters tape works good to use for practice… helps get lines right. Can use it to leave a guide an 1/8” off your final line.
