Im thinking about going with blackvue 970x lte +, or maybe viofo a229pro. Both support a rear camera, but not super pumped about losing the camera if/when I take the top off. (its a hard top if that changes anything)

I've had a particularly bad time trying to find options for mounting. It seems like everyone hooks to the rear glass, on the roof just in front of the rear window facing out, or I saw one person mount on tailgate.

Looking at things for a permanent mount, it seems like I'd have to mount on rear tailgate, or maube devise a mount from the roll bar. Seems like that mount would be a little long to be closed to rear window, but I'm actually leaning towards that option. I just wish there were general purpose mounts that could use two preexisting unused holes towards the back part of the rollbar.

I've seen those rearview mirror replacements, and the prospects of mounting a rear camera on the outside would be nice... but those options seem to be very specific(not just any 2chan camera would work here). I'm also specifically trying to get something with the next gen starvis2 sensor (for better clarity and reading plates etc) so the rear view replacement cam would have to be pretty spectacular clarity in recording for me to want to go that route.

Anyone else do anything different that would give the best possible view, without having to change how camera is mounted when removing the top?

I mounted mine on the rear crossbar plastic cover. It catches more than the rear view mirror, more than enough to catch someone rear-ending you. If you want it for making videos for social media, then probably not a good spot.

You don't have good options IMO. The only permanent solution is the rollbar and that is not a great option.

A more elegant solution is to buy something like a 2 channel Viofo A139 pro, plus an extra rear camera and cable. You then mount one camera permanently on the roll bar and one on the rear window and run cables to both of them.

The rollbar camera will connect to the "internal" feed of the A139 pro. When the hard top is in place you simply disconnect it to avoid the frame rate reduction of a 3 channel syatem. When you pull the hard top off you connect it with the existing cable. The Viofo signal cables are the thinnest in the business and are very easy to route. The most difficult part is the A pillar where anything with an RCA connector would be an absolute nightmare to run.

If you go the Viofo route make sure to buy the hardwire kit with angled connectors. I mounted my A139 pro on the passenger side of the box in the center of the windshield and the angled connectors are not only slimmer but allow you to push the mount point up towards the upper edge of the windshield. You are going to have to remove the ferrite choke at the e d because it is bulky, unsightly, and impossible to stuff behind the trim. Suggest getting the kit with the included add-a-fuse, more cost effective than buying separately.

Last but not least, I ran into a problem when I tapped the side mirror fuse for permanent power - the side mirrors stopped working. There are several spare (not used) circuits in the internal box, it is safer to tap into one of them than a fuse that already services something else.

I have the Viofo A139 Pro (Starvis is 2 sensor) and I installed the rear camera to the back glass, but I have a MOD top with the removable windows, so I don't plan on taking the whole roof off very often.
I played around with different locations including the rollbar, but didn't like the field of view as much.

You could get a 2nd rear camera and mount 1 to the rollbar and 1 to the glass and just move the cable from one to the other when you remove the top.

I think I would want the rear camera mounted outside (tire, somewhere) so the top being on or off wouldn`t matter. What do Jeep guys do ?

I mean that could be an option, but most dashcam vendors make rear camers for insides only. That being said, I suppose maybe rear camera should be something a bit more ready for the weather anyway... top off... could be subjected to stuff that electronics may not be so happy with

The FullVue camera system mounts their rear camera on the mounting lugs of the spare tire. the camera doesn't poke out beyond the spare wheel assembly. Wouldn't be too hard to fab up a mount there.

If you want a front and rear camera, and the rear to be outside, i would suggest either the Wolfbox G840S or the G900. It will replace your rear view mirror, with a built in front camera, and it comes with a rear camera that mounts outside to your rear plate, or tire area. I have the G900, and it works awesome. I can now see completely in the back of the truck, and along the side back area, as it is a wide screen camera. Great for taking videos or pictures for social media too. Get the OE bracket so you can completely replace the factory mirror and not have any bulkyness. Check it out at www.wolfbox.com

Not sure if I care so much about social media, I care about clarity, being able to make out plates and see driver. Honestly I've not seen a camera on a vehicle that does a great job at that except maybe the newer starvis2 sensor cameras. Teslas seem decent too.

I have the ThinkWare from Ford accessories and I double sided taped the rear camera to the back of the forward facing camera. Partly because I was lazy and did not want to run all the way to the rear but I ended up liking the view out of all the side and rear windows that it allows. I watch people all the time walking past the side and a few peeking into the door glass to check the inside out. Only down side is it is recording you and your passengers all the time which itself can be hilarious at times as well :)
