I remember, from when I lived in San Francisco. There was a gas station in Burlingame, that sold 100+octane fuel. It makes a HUGE difference! At the time I had a MB C43.

Where was/is it?
I use 91. I have 5300 miles on the 2.7L and have noticed a bump in mileage. 17-19mpg mix of city and highway. Not bad.

I told my dealer I was going to go full my Bronco up with 93 too and he strongly advised against it. Turns out he was right. Apparently the fact that I still don't have a Bronco created a huge "dangerous" situation at the gas station.
My experience exactly.! Also, 87 is going to be the freshest fuel at any station in the nation. As a rough average, 87 sells @ 8 gallons to every 1 gallon of 93 nationwide. Here, 93 is $0.60 per gallon more.!
From what I've read, both the 2.7 and 2.3 have a 10:1 compress in ratio, which is a little high for 87 octane. You might experiment with 91 to see if your mileage or smoothness change. Your computer may very well be combating some "unnoticeable" predetonation.
MY 2.7 Tacoma has a 9.6ish compression ratio and runs noticablely better on 91.
That being said, if you live in an area where premium fuels aren't sold very much, your local peteol tank farm may very well be sending premium fuels to lower octane gas station tanks, just to cycle it out of their system.

There are only 2 grades of gas delivered to most stations. 87 and whatever the highest is there, 93 or 94 (Sunoco) or only 91 as in Western US. Anything in-between is an at the pump blend.
If ypu buy 93 after te last person bought 87, and pump only has one hose, you are getting 87 first, whatever is in the hose. On the other hand, if you buy 87 after 93 you get a little freebie boost.
As far as environmental difference? A gallon is a gallon, only the additive for octane is changed.

I noticed a difference between 93 and 91 on my 6K mile road trip. I started with 93 and when I got to AZ and CA it wasn’t available (91 only) Less oomph for sure. Of course I’m pushing 35s with my 2.3 manual so that may be why the little extra is noticeable.
Your post is accurate except for this last statement. High and low octanes are refined differently and Brand specific additives (Shell, Marathon, etc) are added at the tank farm when loading the trucks. Often, high and low octanes are blended at the pump to get mid grade octane. Maybe we are saying the same thing but in different words?
As far as environment al damage, when a motor needs higher octane, the better gas mileage and longevity of the parts (that have their own carbon footprint) are offsets to any negatives.
