Fairbanks to Cantwell Mini Alaska Road Trip

We drove from Fairbanks to Cantwell over the weekend to stay in a yurt and poke around the area.

one of the doggies got excited and loaded herself up early. color match was unintentional but not unexpected (I have a problem with getting too much yellow gear)

Put on my Shark Thule and tried out my Kuat Pivot for the first time. Put on a basket with yeti food insulating vessels… before moving to Alaska I never used coolers to keep things warm.. haha. The sunrise in Fairbanks made things even more orange than normal…

roads were pretty icy, but I’m accustomed to that after a few months in Fairbanks…

a few hours later, got the bronco to the yurt. Made it in time for some pretty sunset views.

The pups liked the spot by the Toyo stove

Night descended…

next day we drove around some. We went up the road a few miles to where the Denali highway was closed. I saw Truck House Life’s truck there, and was sad he wasn’t around. It would have been cool to meet the guy. I watched a lot of his vids when I was thinking of moving up to Alaska. He looked to be rocking a pretty sick snow machine trailer setup. There was also a pretty crazy jeep parked in the area.

We also visited an igloo on the side of the highway. It had an interesting story to it, and I’d been wanting to take a closer look.

now back to Fairbanks. I’m looking out for moose and will post a pic here if I see one

Looks like an awesome trip. I was checkin out your wheels...thinking hmmm.. I haven't seen those before so I zoomed in. I'm pretty sure you will have to appear before the Bronco Tribal Council soon.

Wait- does this mean I can put TRD ladder wheels on my Bronco?! The thought never occurred to me until this moment, but I've always loved those wheels

I'm surprised the Igloo is still standing, they built that thing to last! Too bad they didn't build it to fire code for the hotel it was intended to be.
There used to be a gas station and convenience store there.
Nice to see some winter pictures, haven't been through since we got married and honeymooned in FBX. BTW not many potty stops in the winter between FBX and Cantwell.

I've been wanting to do the yurts for awhile now, it's just never worked out and my last trip to FBX was a quick weekend and we took the Richardson highway home so didn't even pass it on the way home.

Looks like a lot of fun though!

Probably yea! You’ll want to get some adapter rings but they’re readily available. I’ll link the ones I used down below.

the Toyota wheels do poke out a bit compared to the base set I was running.

(edit: pulled the wheels from a 4 runner. Same lug pattern, just different centering ring size. Was able to use the 4runner lugs too)

Yeah, reading some of the articles about the igloo, I was pretty sad to hear it never got off the ground in the first place. Someone’s dream that never quite made it. It’s such a cool structure though. Surprisingly robust, considering the years of neglect!

I hear you about the stops… haha. Learned that one the hard way.

Thanks! I was a little nervous about the highway/ice, but it was all smooth sailing. I need to check out different routes, I’ve pretty much only been down that road so far.

Ice and snow is just life half the year, but you know that given you're in Fairbanks haha Good snow tires make all the difference.

If you ever make it down to Anchorage, shoot a PM. Also the drive through Denali is absolutely beautiful.

So I am learning about the ice and snow, haha. Since it’s so persistent I’ve had to modify my thinking on driving with snow and ice (vs eastern WA). Definitely had to learn ways of finding confidence in my tires / hopefully haven’t thrown too much caution out the window!

yes I will have to go back in the summer and experience more of that area. There’s so darn much to see, I have trouble deciding where even to start. Oh well, seems there’s plenty of time to explore at least
