It depends on how soon it's caught. Generally, they inspect for damage and decide. If water and road debris get in there, it doesn't take long to make a mess of things, especially if any part loses grease protection.
Understood. My point was that you can't just replace the torn $20 boot. Doesn't make a lot of sense to have to trash a good drive shaft simply because the boot isn't available separately.

The shaft has a list price of $220.00 so it's not cost effective for Ford to pay labor to disassemble a shaft (if even possible at the dealer level without damaging it) plus part, it's cheaper to just replace the assembly. Pretty much the same way with CV axles anymore. Not worth the time to remove, disassemble, reboot, repack than it is just to replace.

So total cost for a shaft is how much? This is just a wear and tear item that will eventually be on every single vehicle.
