Out wheeling in the snow today and decided not to use Mud/Ruts like usual on a familiar trail, but manually engage 4H / RL / SBD / Trac Off - a much better experience! No unnecessary revving, smoother shifts, more predictable traction throughout the day, anyone else have similar experiences? In the snow or else where?…

I was moving through packed and fresh snow up to a foot deep, the packed snow in the heavily rutted areas was nasty, surprisingly technical trying to stay outta the treeline!

I’m getting a pretty good feel for the Bronco now and have been playing around with settings, modes and driving, really starting to get comfortable behind the wheel.

Just a few thoughts, another fun day out and about!

Goat modes can adjust some things under the hood, like steering response, throttle response, and shift points. So they can do a bit more than just push buttons you could otherwise push yourself

Different modes do so differently - as Captain Obvious may say.

But you always have the freedom to push those buttons yourself if you want - that’s what I do most of the time

Generally I agree. However I was recently in a long deep squirrelly mud situation when I noticed the traction control seemed to be throttling back just when I really need to spin & sling to get outta there. So between mud holes I hit GOAT mode Mud & Ruts and I could tell that it definitely helped. So there’s that.

Iā€˜ll add this - since it looks like you are blessed to live near big steep mountains. …

I came down a long steep 4WD-only mountain pass (some call it a J**p road but not me) - over miles of steep downhill rock crawling from 3,600 meters (11,700 ft) downhill to 2,600 meters (8,600 ft) using Crawl Control. I started to smell something hot & realized it was probably the brakes. Even though I was in 4Low I suspected that maybe the computer was relying on brakes more than gearing/engine compression, so I disengaged crawl control and used manual shift mode (10 spd auto) to pick lower gear, then continuing without changing any other variable. Within minutes the hot brake smell was gone. Suspicion confirmed.

Yeah, that makes sense, it really wants to turn those tires over!

Yeah when I’m in four low getting vertical, I like using the ā€œone pedalā€ mode - it works wonderfully, but you do get that smell after a long run.

I check the breaks whenever I rotate the tires, so far so good.

And yes, hell yes! The Rockies are truly awesome…

@Karsa we’ve been to Banff & Jasper and they are amazing! Just in a rental car though. Hopefully soon with our Bronco. Would love tips on where to camp & what to see & do.

I overheated the GOAT Modes once doing BAJA mode exclusively several days straight. I was actually in Baja, doing proper Baja stuff. Anyways went to 4H for awhile and GOAT modes all returned later. In that case I think the spooled up Turbo's were heating things up under the hood.

Bronco's may overly depend on certain modes when used to extreme's, some variation is a good thing. There's probably a 'side chick' joke in here somewhere

To be clear, I never had a failure or error code or bad behavior - I just thought ā€œSmells like the brakes are getting hot. Let’s try this with gearing instead of Crawl Control (which probably uses the brakes).ā€

Overheated the GOAT modes? That’s a new one on me. @Canyon Coolers Was there a message on the dash or something?

Okay, if you want to get away from the tourists, start in Coleman, AB. That’s where you can get on the the FTR ( Forestry Trunk Road, highway 40 ), it’s a long north / south run that will take you through the foothills north all the way to Grande Prairie. It’s gravel and pretty beat up in places but always passable with a stock 4x4 ( except winter closure’s ). There is all kinds of camping, fishing, light wheeling and sight seeing. Don’t forget the bear spray, Google will tell you more!

No all the Goat modes were just non responsive, no lights, warnings, or anything came on. The manual 4H/2H buttons worked fine. The Engineers with Fast Intentions were also on the run with us, and I recall one of them saying he hated Baja mode and that it just heated everything up.

That was a year ago, its been fine ever since. Thankfully.

Tried em, but didn't end up using after that.

Always turn off traction control when I hit dirt. Everything else is turned on as needed outside of 2H.

got stuck on a mud/rut road due to bad gps re-route and the auto 4wd was not even close to as good as putting it into mud/rut mode

same with slippery. Had a situation with a re-route onto about a foot of un plowed snow in December, slippery mode was superior.

I’m a big fan of Slippery mode up north here, it works wonders back and forth to work in the winter months. I like how it prevents those spinning on ice to instant grab on pavement scenarios, much easier on the drivetrain!
