Has anyone had any experience with a hood protector that uses tape to secured to the hood? And if so does it damage the paint if removed

That's what the Ford Aeroskin and Aeroskin II use. 3M heavy-duty mounting tape. Doesn't damage the hood if you take it off correctly using heat and patience, just like using said tape on any other part of a vehicle.
Edit to add: when removing, cut the tape in two halves using floss or wax string - then you can remove the tape from the paint separately, using either solvents, an eraser wheel, heat and your fingers, or goo gone in worst case scenarios. I'd avoid solvents if possible as those could discolor or damage the clear coat.

Proper preparation as instructions say and it stays stuck. As Nibroc99 says patience getting it off will not damage paint.

My experience is that it DID damage the paint. I bought my Bronco used and the PO installed a carbon fiber look protector/deflector. The carbon fiber got weathered and I pulled it off very carefully. This is the result!

Ford Bronco Hood protector using tape? IMG_5649

The pic is a bit misleading because the chips are very small. They were all along the outside edge of the 3M tape. I ended up installing the Ford non-carbon fiber protector and positioned it to cover the chips.

EDIT: I need to clarify. These chips were along the outside edge of the tape , NOT under the tape.

I removed many things from vehicles using nothing more than a hairdryer and patience and they always come off perfectly clean with nothing left behind. I also restore 50 to 75-year-old Tractors. I also use my wife’s hairdryer to remove all the decals and they come off clean using that method. As long as you prep the hood properly and make sure it’s perfectly clean, you shouldn’t have any issues with 3M adhesive tape installations.

The tape shouldn't be an issue but it's still possible for parts of it to rub against your paint and cause wear. I've had good luck applying PPF on the paint before installing stuff like that

I had an Aeroskin on my 2023 Bronco BD a little over a year. I noticed several spots where dust/debris was collecting on the windshield side of the Aeroskin. It irritated me enough that I spent some time trying to clean it out without causing damage to the skin or the hood. Gave up. Removed it, and to my disappointment, there were visable marks in the paint and very noticable "yellowing" of the paint under the skin.

I considered setting up an appointment with my body shop but instead went to work with Maguire's Cleaning wax. It appears to be a very mild abrasive. I'm very pleased with the result. 99.8% of the marks are gone and the yellowing is gone as well. As much I want to protect the leading edge of the hood, I'll never put another one of those on.

I originally installed a Ford Aeroskin II, it stayed on for 3 years until I removed it. I had no problems or damage removing it. I then installed a lighted one.

Did you use heat and/or any solvents while removing the tape? Or did you just pull the deflector straight up without cutting the tape with a wax string or floss first? Definitely need to cut the tape and then remove the tape separately from the deflector to prevent it from yanking the paint off of the metal. Paint adhesion can only be so good.
