Ipad usage for Bronco :)

Wow, I use my iPad every day even though I have multiple computers and an iPhone. Some of my uses are:

Kindle Books, free books from BookBub. I can't fall asleep at night without reading.
Phone when I'm upstairs and the phone rings while on the charger downstairs (yes it works as a phone).
Face time calls. I have an iPhone mini 13 that I plan to keep but the iPad to me is better for facetime.
While traveling I hook it up to the hotel TV via HDMI to watch premium channels I subscribe to or movies I have downloaded.
Show customers drawings, literature, etc.. Easier to pass around a group than a laptop.

For the Bronco I use a Garmin Tread Overland.

So I ONLY need to buy an ipad that is Cellular capable and NO cell plan at all? How would my ipad connect to the OnX servers? needs internet right?

I use an 11” iPad Pro cellular capable, but no cellular plan. OnX has what they call offline maps. A tab at the bottom. It gives you the ability to download mapping in several different resolutions for any area or trail you care to. Do this while you’re at home w/ WiFi. You then name and save that file. I have many saved covering the Moab area. Then, when you go into an area, go to offline mode, use the offline map you’ve saved and you’re good to go. Don’t forget to turn on its tracking mode so you can follow breadcrumbs back if need be.

I run onX on the iPad and TrailsOffroad on my phone and apple carplay. I like onX mapping features and TrailsOffroad waypoints, distances and descriptions. I subscribe to both.

Edit - TrailsOffoad has an offline mode also.

That’s interesting as Apple says the WiFi only iPads don’t have dedicated gps functions, as well as every reference I can find. The only way it should give a location is if it’s receiving a WiFi signal for triangulation.

I believe you are correct. I’ve had it a long time, and believe it does have cellular capability which I have never used.

In my old age I have become completely computer illiterate and can barely read iPhone…use iPad almost exclusively…set a new record on iphone weekly usage, 1 minute a day…signed up for onX but have not figured out how to use it…computers piss me off…end of rant
I do want to mount IPad and use onX but need to figure it out…I need to follow someone or be lost as it is…

I haven't read all of the questions or responses in the thread but we have been using an ipad and an ipad mini in our jeep and in my Bronco for several years now. We don't have cellular capability on our ipads - we use GAIA and we have a bluetooth GPS antenna that we put in the vehicle that will allow us to see where we are on the map without needing cellular - we frequently off-road on Drummond Island in the UP of Michigan and the cellular service there is spotty to non-existant so this works great for us without needing to depend on cellular.

This is the GPS antenna that we use along with the ipad in the vehicle. Currently the ipad is mounted on a ram mount on the grab handle.

Good to know, thanks! I have been looking for a newer iPad but it's hard to find deals on the cellular version. This will make it easier to replace.
