Long live the legend of the great adventurer who dared stare the unforgiving Mojave in the face.
May we all learn the lessons of his journey.

The man with the orange flag stared at the desert.
It stretched past the limits of mortal vision, past the limits of comprehension.
He dared question its might and voracity, outright mocking its lack of emotion or care for any creature that dared oppose it.
He shouted into the expanse "I WILL plant my flag of triumph!"
The wind answered back with a howl.
Then silence.
The silence of desolation, despair, and complete emptiness that lay before him.
The silence of complete beckoning and temptation.
Many before him had tried and failed.
The weary traveler contemplated before taking a single step. Then another.
Sand.
It's coarse, gritty, and it gets everywhere.
Dare he seek the high ground?
Not sure if this is a reference to Stephen King’s “The Gunslinger,” but if it is…niiiiiice!

It absolutely was! It makes me happy at least one other person on here has had the chance to read it (and notice it).
“The man in black fled across the desert and the Gunslinger followed. It was the apotheosis of all deserts.”

I stopped short of plagiarism but wanted a nod to SK as well.

Greatest start to a novel ever, IMO. And highly recommended reading, I agree.

Fun short movie!

I too beckoned the call of the desert and those GPS coordinates engraved into the DNA of our beloved machines and included a visit during a long road trip. But being alone on street tires, decided to keep it a distant visit:
