Does anyone have any ideas on how to get oddly shaped nuts out of the roll cage? I dropped the below odd shaped nuts in the roll cage in the location circled on the photo. They are already a little bent just from getting them into place and then when I pulled the bolts I wasn’t careful and they both fell in. I doubt even if I got a telescoping and bending magnet in there to find them they would fit out the hole. I also pulled the inside air bag cover bit: and all there is is an airbag and a closed roll bar tube. It is driving me nuts having them rattle around near my ears so I am thinking about just speaking expanding foam in there to pin them in place.

I can’t recall if those are a closed tube or not. Have you tried pulling the trim cover off the air bag along that beam? The bolt may just be laying on top of the airbag or something. That trim is easy to take off

The first thought I had was using a strong magnet to move it to an exit hole somewhere. Not sure if it’s really feasible.

Or maybe the smallest possible version of a flexible grabber like this one:

I dropped a small screw that just happened to fall into a hole in the carpet and the metal floor near the seat mounts. The trick I used was to just tape a small magnet to my pinky finger and was able to reach it. Using my finger let me flex and feel for where the screw had rolled. I dunno if that trick will work here.

The roll cage structure there is just an empty tube - nothing inside. Do you know where the nut currently sits? The hole on the side of the cage near the front (green arrow) is a bit larger than the holes on the top and looks like a good access point. Maybe shine a light in one to the top holes and use a stick to try and kick the nut & bolt forward until you can use that forward side hole to grab them with a magnet.

I'll have to see if my bars have that side hole, I don't remember seeing it. But the nuts are way back in the tube pretty close to the B-pillar area.

Edit: but if I do have that side hole maybe I can get them out there, I'll just get up to speed and jump on the brakes and let inertia help. lol

LOL. Just check with a flashlight first to see if the front end of that tube is sealed off, otherwise your nuts may fall inside the A-pillar. 🤪

I ran into the same problem. It looks like you installed the same roof rack as I did. There's other issues with the rack, but more on that later. I tried using a magnet "stick" and couldn't lock onto the nut. The rattling was driving me crazy especially at the deer lease on rough roads it was nonstop. Once I got on smooth roads I was at a stop light and punched it. It sounded like the nut rolled all the way to the back and maybe to the bottom of the roll bar??? Haven't heard it since. I'm headed to the deer lease Thursday, I'll let you know if that was successful. If not, I was going to use the spray foam solution.

The rack. The cross bars vibrated up and down horribly and hit the soft top at freeway speeds. I added a basket bolted to the cross bars and that fixed it. I'm going to work on creating a better structural solution.

Good luck with your noisy nuts!

If you have or can borrow a borescope, they often have a magnet attachment to retrieve items. Being able to see is a huge advantage to just using a magnet.

Strong magnet with a towel in between (so you don't scratch the paint.), strong vacuum (tape other openings), or air compressor to "push" it where you want it, then a collapsible magnet pen deal to get it out. Couple quick ideas.

Yeah, the roof rack is garbage, it is just sitting in the corner of my garage, where it will stay, alas this rattle is a near constant reminder of my wasted money.

I really bought it to get the brackets. I want to figure out a way to adapt a hinge to one side and add structurally stronger cross bars. They need to be much more rigid "up and down".

Not sure of the roll cage make up but maybe try blocking off every opening you can find and then place a vacuum over the access opening you hope to retrieve the item from. Maybe, just maybe you can vacuum it out or at a minimum pull the item to the opening in order to fish it out.
