The ingredients:
40W LED Flood Pods $29.25 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D59NG2Z9
Universal hood clamps $13.59 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJY8B1F8
Lots of “Best Ways” to do aux reverse lights. I do have higher output lights in for the reverse lights, but I wanted brighter so I can actually see what’s behind me when reversing.
My first approach was to mount them on a small rack thing on the spare tire. That worked well for both the lights and a rear mirror camera… until I got a flat tire in the rain on the side of the freeway while running late to an appointment. The extra few steps to disconnect wires and extra bolts kinda pissed me off.
I thought about going above the spare, but that (IMO) would be for “off-road-use” only. I don’t want to blind people every time I back up at the grocery store. Where can I mount lower without cutting into my bumper? Because if I’m going to do that, I might as well get a cooler bumper. If I’m going to do that, I might as well get a new front bumper to match. Suddenly, light relocation just jumped in cost. (Long term I plan on switching to a hard-top w/ roof rack which (IMO) best place for off-road reverse lights/chase lights/etc.)
My solution was to use some generic hood mounts for ditch lights or whatever and mount them to the bottom lip of the tailgate. No permanent marks if I do splurge on new bumpers later. Since they are only for backing up in my driveway or dark parking area, etc., I didn’t need some uber expensive lights, so I got some knock-off pods (which I have been using for about 2 years now and they activate whenever I’m in reverse… still working fine). FYI: Not actually as "blinding" as they look in the picture, they are pretty tame.
So that’s my current reverse light solution. Maybe that helps someone out.
