Hello, I’m new here and hope this is an ok question to ask.

I just took off my 35s and put on a set of OEM steelies. I need to commute 100 miles a day for a few months and want to save the 35s and get better MPG.

Seems to be fine other than some wired noise when I make slow sharp turns. I realize this is because I did not recalibrate the tire size. I do not have a forscan.

Will I damage anything if I don’t recalibrate and just drive as is?

If I have to recalibrate, can you recommend a good affordable forscan?

Thanks a bunch!

The only issue will be the speedometer needing calibration. The wired weird noise that you are hearing is something you should try and pinpoint.

I agree with above comment, this swap should not cause any noise. The first thing I would check is the lug nuts, make sure they are torqued properly.

Did my own rotation on Friday and heard a clicking. Turned out several of my front driver lugs were loose. My 4yr old daughter must have distracted me on the last tire! Make sure that shit is dialed in to 100ft/lbs!

Could also be traction control kicking in during a turn. If the computer is expecting a certain amount of rotation based on turning radius and the tires are a different circumference, it will throw the numbers out of wack and assume you’re losing traction and engage traction control measures, usually by selectively applying brake to individual corners. Are you familiar with the sound of ABS controller kicking in? Buzzing or grinding or whirling sound, sometimes with a vibration?

Thanks a bunch for the replies.

- I’ll triple check the torque
- It does sound like traction control kicking in on front only. I’ll shut off the TC and check.
- I get 20.5 mpg on the 100 mile round trip (95% hwy) w/the 35s and will post what I get with the steelies. Need to burn a tank of gas first since the odometer is incorrect.

How does it look with the steelies on the SAS suspension? Have any side view pics? Does it feel faster considering the 4.70 gearing on tiny wheel/tires now?

When figuring gas mileage... be sure to multiply the number on the display by 0.8571 (i.e. 30/35) since you're going to a smaller (30") tire... since (I assume) you didn't adjust the tire size in the computer. Also remember that what registers as 65 MPH is really more like (65*0.8571) or 55.7.

Nice idea though.... saving those bigger expensive tires.

Note: Anybody in Sacramento area want to do the same I've got steelies/16s with factory TPMS I'll sell for $600. I was going to paint them white for that Heritage look, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Are the steelies you put on tires and wheels? from stock Black Diamond or Base?
Stock Black Diamond tires are not quiet.

That is what I use, great product. It can be had cheaper with some shopping. Got mine for 159.95 free shipping directly from Superchips/Edelbrock.
Amazon comments says it does not work on ‘23s…this true?

The latest I have heard is the Flashcal has not yet been updated for the 23's. They seem to be dragging their feet on that one. Mine works great on my 22, so hopefully they will have them updated soon.
