My wife and I have used Steelie magnets on our phones for years, and we swear by them. The easiest way to mount them in your car is usually the little 1” steel ball with the base that sticks to your dash with 3M tape. Here are a couple on the dash of my truck…
Unfortunately, the Bronco gives you no good location for them. Everything is either the wrong texture, or the phone would be in the way of something important, like the touch screen, or the airbag, etc. As clever as the BYOD mount is, we absolutely hate having crap up on top of the dashboard, especially when the dash is already so high in the first place. (Frankly, I don’t know how you guys drive around with phones and cameras and radios and shit all over the dash, but whatever…
)
So I took a simpler route. I made a mount to replace the dog tag next to the shifter (which we may put somewhere else in the Bronco. I’ve made lots of these little “lollipops” for things like desk stands and mounts on my tractor and other places. I start with 1” mild steel balls from McMaster-Carr that cost about 9 bucks for a 10-pack, so these things are super cheap to make.
I fabbed a little plate out of 16ga. to match the factory dog tag, then plug-welded the stem of the lollipop to it. I haven’t decided if I’m going to paint it black or just clear-coat it as is. It works great!
