Does it get much greener than recycling dead dinosaurs and swamp grass?

Higher octane doesn't fuel doesn't have more energy than lower octane fuel but it does allow the engine to use a higher compression ratio which means "mo powa"

Your engines compression ratio is “fixed” short of a piston, head or camshaft change.

That said higher octane may allow (depending on engine load, temperature, elevation, etc) your engine to use more ignition timing without detonation and knock sensors retarding your timing which allows the engine to compress the fuel /air mixture more thus providing more power. ( Kind of like compression ratio but not exactly the same) All that and the biggest effect on mpg is controlled by the …. (Drum roll) … drivers right foot!!!

You are correct in that the ratio is fixed. That was a mistake on my part when I was explaining that. What isn't fixed though is the amount of fuel and air entering the cylinder. The higher octane fuel allows for higher cylinder pressure.

the general rule of thumb is "if your car doesn't require premium dont get premium". 87 is more volatile, 93 allows for more timing/boost to be ran before detonation occurs. if you dont have it tuned up to a 92oct tune there is no compelling reason to run it other than to empty your wallet faster

Yes, the compression ratio is fixed, but these are turbo charged engines with electrically controlled waste gates. When you are burning premium fuel the computer can give the engine more boost (ya know Eco BOOST) and increase the power and efficiency of the engine. When you burn lower octane, with more boost it's going to knock and then the management system will open the waste gate and reduce the boost.

Without an computer controlled turbo (like every car built more than 15 years old), the engine was either designed for premium and it benefited from high octane, or it wasn't and you were wasting your money paying for premium. That is not necessarily true anymore
