Depends on the mud. East Coast mud is a lot less nasty than Southwest mud. If I get mud in CA, AZ, and UT I make it a point to stop by a hand wash as soon as I make it back to asphalt. The mud is still not fully dry and the folk operating those hand washes don't get all pissy with you for leaving a crap ton of mud in their bay, ukke the sissies in San Diego who sometimes even post signs "no mud washing".

it also matters where you're at...where I live, mud is more clay than dirt...and clay is no thank you!It’s fun, and sometimes unavoidable! But the clean up takes forever
Which is why you need to arrange for a handy-dandy thunderstorm to hit you on the highway on the way home. I got that one time and the truck was clean top to bottom - no need to wash the underside even. Of course the inside was still really dusty but that was easier to clean up.
And then the next time you work on it is absolutely horrible
When we did Rimrocker a few months ago, it rained over night when we were camping. So the next day we drove in mud allllllll day. No matter how much it rained in Moab, it just wasn't enough. Even rained on the way back to Texas...it still took a ton of work to get all the mud off the Bronco.
I must have had easier mud. Probably not clayey.
