I've seen quite a few posts of totaled Broncos and Bronco fires. I know nothing about other vehicles but are our vehicles running with a higher rate of totaling than other vehicles or is this just the average automotive industry rate of incident?
Well, let's think about it.
1 - it's an aluminum bodied vehicle. In a lot of cases, the panels get replaced, not repaired.
So the cost to repair is high. Insurance companies don't total based on how bad a wreck looks, but on what cost to repair is compared to what they get out of the vehicle for salvage....IE....whatever costs them the least in the long run. So it's easy for them to total a vehicle & send it to CoPart or whatever to recoup some of their $
2 - it's always going to have more fires than your average vehicle, because a ton of us are running around with extra lights & other mods wired up & while we all think we're good at it, most of us aren't professionals.
And we're probably overloading fuses & relays & all sorts of stuff.
I know I added a fire extinguisher to mine just because of how many wired connections I'd made with lights, ARB compressor, winch, WeBoost & more planned.

The Bronco is marketed as a vehicle to be customized. With some of the modifications that I have seen it is no wonder that they are bursting into flames 😄

According to ChatGPT
“The Ford Bronco has a fatal accident rate of 6.6 per billion miles, which is 2.3 times the overall average. The Ford Bronco Sport has a rate of 6.2 per billion miles. Both are among the most dangerous vehicles on U.S. roads.”

According to Google’s AI
“The Ford Bronco has a fatal accident rate of 6.6 per billion miles, which is 2.3 times the overall average. The Ford Bronco Sport has a rate of 6.2 per billion miles. Both are among the most dangerous vehicles on the road”

I think this means we collectively suck as drivers. It also may be fake news as these AI tools hallucinate. They offered no data on fires. My Bronco won’t even start unless I light a cigar though, so stay tuned for another fire…
Statistics, polls, deaths by Covid in 95 yr olds with numerous comorbidities are all useless and indicate what the statistician wants to relay.
How many of us know a Bronco owner whose vehicle was “totaled”? I know of one. Snowstorm, young girl came flying around a tight corner, 180’d and TOTALED our friend’s Bronco. He was virtually at a standstill when she hit him. Not his or the Bronco fault. Lots of stupid, un and underinsured drivers out there.

Well... if you look at the IIHS safety ratings... the Bronco looks pretty good. That is more what I'm interested in. The only "Marginal" rating seems around headlights. So maybe its the driver?
https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/ford/bronco-4-door-suv/2024

Other (Driver) factors you have to realize:
1. The Bronco isn't a low-to-the-ground car. It won't handle as well.
2. Most cars don't go off-road, and therefore won't end up on sides/tops because of it.
3. 4WD drivers (in snow/ice) can go faster, but can't stop any better (driver error).

What are those 17 other cars that did worse? That'd tell us something.

Not sure about "Bronco fires". Never seen much on this forum about them.

These things make the Corvair look safe...
I hear you! I just sold a '67 El Camino. 283, 2-sp Powerglide, manual steering, non-power assist drum brakes, lap belts only. It was literally a small step up from a farm tractor. It changed my perspective on what a "safe car" is considering humanity survived the '60s and '70s. Instead of "anti-lock" brakes, it had a feature I like to call "rando-lock" brakes. In a panic stop with your behind planted squarely in the bench seat and pushing with everything you got, it may or may not lockup any combination of the four wheels. I had radials on it, but old fashioned bias ply rubber would have really complimented the existing safety features and handling well.

I also ride street bikes. The Bronco in comparison feels like a fortress.
