I have 3 radios mounted in my rig.

My Icom 2730a has a remote head and is mounted with a modified mountains to metal bracket behind the glove box. antenna off the A pillar

My Icom F5021 VHF is mounted in the center console storage cubby, antenna off the A pillar

My Midland GMRS is mounted under the shifter in the center console. Antenna mounted on the C pillar under the hard top

This is exactly why I installed the Yaesu Dual Band with MARS mod. I needed VHF for an EXO run, but also wanted UHF/GMRS to use when we take trips out West. Also didn't want to install 2 separate radios if I didn't have to.
which model are you using?

Also, does anyone know if any of these radios can be set up with a push to talk button and a remote mounted mic, so i dont have to have a handset at all (dont want a headset either). I have a solution already for the output to play through the center speaker in the dash.

Mine is the Yaesu FTM-400XDR. I think they recently discontinued it and replaced it with the FTM-500DR, though. Bought it from GigaParts with the MARS mod Level 4.

Looks like we all use this same radio.

What is a level 4 mod?

I think that's just a marketing term Gigaparts uses for their MARS mod, but not really sure. I took a look at my order invoice when I was responding to @Tye and that's how it was listed, so I passed it along. No idea if they offer mod levels 1-3 or what those might entail.:D

excuse my ignorance here obviously I understand the legalities of the Mars mod, but in actual use case of the radio, is it still easy to not get confused when you're switching between using it as a VHF and a GMRS? i'm debating if I just keep two separate radios or go the Mars mod route. I wonder if the 110W Kenwood can be Mars modded as well.

I haven't found it to be too bad, but it's a possibility. On my Yaesu, the active transmit band is slightly brighter and has white characters on the display, while the characters on the other band are gray. You can tell from a quick glance which one is currently active. To switch bands, just tap the band on the touchscreen to make it the active one.

Here's a pic I got from Google that shows the difference:

I will say this: if you don't have any interest in learning how to program the radio and just want it to work out of the box, the two-radio scenario is a far simpler option.

Buying a HAM radio and getting a MARS mod to unlock non-HAM VHF frequencies is more involved: it's not quite as simple as installing it, turning it on, and talking. You'll have to get a list of the frequencies you need to use, then manually program them into the radio's memory presets and name them. None of it is hard, but it's also not exactly plug and play.

On the Kenwood question- if you're looking at the one on the PCI Race Radios website, I don't think that one is a dual-band unit. Also, I think they can pre-program it to use WEATHERMAN when you purchase it, so you won't have to worry about a MARS mod.

Hope that helps you out!

Doesn’t look like the Yaesu 400 or 500 radios are supported by Chirp programming software. How’s the Yaesu software native to the radio? Fairly easy?

Sorry, but I honestly don’t remember. I vaguely remember using it on the second radio and it being somewhat simplistic, but I can’t offer any meaningful insight.

Yea that is what I was thinking. I did the mod myself so curious what other levels meant. Thought I was missing something!

My MARS-modded Yaesu FTM-500 head unit mounted on a Mountains2Metal Over Head Squatch Basket with the basket part cut off so I could mount the unit on it. I used a 20' cat-5 (cat-6? Don't remember, it doesn't matter) network patch cable to connect to the body of the radio.

The radio body is on a Mabett glove box organizer and lives in there.

Mic is mounted to an Archetype Racing (RIP) D handle with a 67 Designs arm and mag mount. A mic cable extension was needed in my case.

Antenna is a Pulse Larsen NMO150/450/758 mounted on a plate I had welded to a Rough Country swing gate brace. SWRs are from 1.05 to 1.60 on 2m and 70cm bands.

I also have a Yaesu exterior speaker mounted to an interior molle panel located above and behind the driver's head area, sounds great. Sorry, no pic as it's raining and I'm too scared of getting wet if I go outside.

I haven't used Yaesu's software but can say the RT Systems programmers work very well, worth the $25 license. I wouldn't bother with RT's cables as I found it much faster to enter your freqs and settings on a computer, write to a micro sd card and move the sd card to the radio to read.

...is it still easy to not get confused when you're switching between using it as a VHF and a GMRS?...

When I programmed my Yaesu radios I put the GMRS freqs in memory channels 001-040 and the ham bands far away from them in the 300-400 memories. Haven't had any issues so far.
