All this talk about CV angles, "maxed out", "you'll blow the CVs", SAS is already maxed, etc. I've searched, but at no point have I seen the actual max spec for the CVs, just a bunch of opinions and speculation. What is the max operating angle?

Safe bet would be whatever angle Ford uses for the Bronco Raptor.

Edited to add Bronco

what are you talking about Willis?
Just going by pics, the CV angle of the Bronco Raptor looks more extreme, but it's an angle chosen and supported by Ford, therefore I would think it's safe.

I don't know what the max angle is but if you're new to off-roading know this. You should never crank your wheels all the way left or right with your front locker engaged. This is a sure way to blow up a CV Joint. I have seen it happen many times. Usually on Toyota Birfield joints but also on any CV Joint. The CV joint starts losing strength the instant the angle increases. When the front end is locked it takes the differential action out of the picture which compounds the problem. So use your front locker with care and if you are forced to crank your wheels all the way the unlock your locker first.

With concerns for lift kits, many people check this by letting the suspension full droop, then trying to spin the axle by the brake rotor, and checking for bind. You can put a jack under the a arm and jack up until it spins free, if it is binding.
There are limit straps that can be installed to limit down travel to eliminate bind. They do stretch on break in so add in 3/4 of stretch or so....
Because of the architecture of suspension, up travel is usually not the issue.

I read up on the Dana/Spicer replacement Advantek 44 and their CV axles and I believe they are good for 29 degrees or something like that. Not sure on OEM

That will only apply to the Raptor. The Raptor has completely different suspension and axles.

I understand this thread is old but the factory service manual does have an 18 degree spec for the CV axle shaft. I'm troubleshooting a supposed CV noise in 4WD after installing a lift.

Attached is a chart showing calculated CV axle angles for my near SAS geometry. I estimate my angles vary from +20 to -20 degrees for full droop to full stuff. And are about 5 degrees at ride height.
