Hey all, I'm at 52k miles on my Wildtrak, and I'm starting to hear the passenger rear brakes singing, like it's time for a pad replacement. On my Mustang, I'd always replace rotors at the same time as pads, but I'd expect rotors to last a lot longer on a truck/SUV than on a sports car.

For anyone that has changed brakes, have you done rotors along with them at my mileage, or did you pad slap it and have the rotors machined? A set of Power Stop Z36 pads for front and rear is about $115, and machining the rotors should be about another $60 in my area. Replacing rotors isn't that expensive - about $425 with pads - but if not needed, I'd rather avoid the expense and spend it on my Mustang.

Also, any experience with the Power Stop Z23 or Z36 pads on the Bronco? I ran the Z23s on my Mustang GT for about six years, and swapped the Z26s in a couple months ago. I'm very happy with them on the Mustang, but this is my first truck/SUV.

It’s not unusual for a vehicle that’s used off-road to have the rotors worn just like the pads at your mileage. Do you do a lot of offroading climbing hills going down hills that type of thing. I would do pads rotors all at the same time. Save yourself some heartache later, having to go back and do it again.

Mustang is 4,000 lb +/- Bronco is 5,300 +/- in Wildtradk trim - active yaw control ESP brake activations works way harder than Mustang.

53K on OE is remarkable IMO and not much aftermarket compares in quality or durability to OE, especially when OE purchased from rockauto, levvittown etc.

Opportunity to upgrade to Alcon kit or two piece floating rotors or Raptor kit?

It's mainly going to depend on how your rotors look.
If you don't want to/need to replace them, I would still highly recommend having them machined at least.

I just bought Powerstop rear pads and rotors for my bronco and went with the Z36 pads.
Haven't installed them yet, but based on others that have them installed and if they're anything like other Powerstop products I have, they will be far superior to OEM

Measure the rotors with some calipers, they will be stamped with size specs on them.
You should be able to get several pad changes from a rotor, at the very least one.

I do not. I've done quite a bit of muddy road stuff, but there aren't any hills or rocks around where I live to climb or descend. If pads made it 50k and rotors are still good, I'd rather replace pads twice than pads and rotors twice.

If I'm debating between spending an additional $300 on rotors, what makes you think I'm going to throw $2500 for an Alcon front brake kit?

I also question "way harder", at least in my case. I'm a hard/late braker in my Mustang, and heel/toe almost every time. I have the Performance Package, which has big brakes and aggressive pads (though I swapped the OEM Brembo pads for Power Stop years ago). Regardless, my dad has 85k on his F-250, which is 7000 pounds and at least half that time was spent towing his 8000 pound trailer. He's still on factory brakes, and while I know that all vehicles wear differently, 50k miles for rotors seems ridiculous.

Got a link to the ones you went with? I've been wanting to do the same thing.

Yeah, this is the plan. I need to do a tire rotation this weekend, anyway, so I'll check thickness. I would expect at least two sets of pads per rotor, but I hear the 2.7L vehicles tend to wear rear brakes relatively quickly.

There are two kits available, one with drilled and slotted rotors, the other with solid rotors.

K8802-36 (drilled and slotted rotors) are the ones I went with in the link that @jacknifetoaswan posted.

Looks like prices almost doubled since I bought it a few weeks ago though, I only paid $324 after tax and shipping.

I have their drilled and slotted rotors on my Mustang. Not sure if it's worth it on the Bronco. What are your thoughts?

Just had the rears done on mine at 75k miles. The rotors were "recommended", they probably could've gone longer but I opted to have them done at the same time & they were starting to rust pretty hardcore.

It’s not just the 2.7, I just replaced rear pads on my 2.3 at 22k ish miles as well as a few others reported also.
I went with the powerstop z36 as well.
Front pads are at about 1/2 life, I believe it’s the traction control causing rear pad wear, working as designed. I like to channel my inner Ironman Stewart too often on the trails.

Raptor kit will be much more involved due to the different lug pattern - so you'd be looking at hubs as well and new wheels at a minimum.

JR
I went with them simply because I didn't even realize there was a solid rotor option. That being said, I probably still would have got them regardless.
