This setup exists for one reason: I once killed my Bronco in the woods.

Early trip to Ocala National Forest. We rolled in way too late, full darkness. The delay? We had to pick up my buddy’s wife who needed two hours to “shower and get ready”… for a two day camping trip. "Ma’am, the woods do not care about your hair. We’re all about to smell like smoke and bug spray in 20 minutes."

So I did what I had to do and turned on my trusty @Baja Designs ditch lights to set up camp.

Moments later, dead battery.

That was the night I realized I didn’t just need more power. I needed a smarter system where camp power and starting power worked together instead of fighting each other. So the research spiral began. I wanted something I could charge while driving, use at camp, move around easily, and not tethered to a power outlet or a giant solar setup just to stay functional.

At first I ran an earlier charging setup with a Bluetti Charger 1 and small power station. A big improvement. I could store power, run gear, and recharge while driving. But it still felt one directional. Great for camp comfort, not great if I made a mistake and the Bronco battery paid for it. I wanted insurance. Something that didn’t just power camp, but could also help the truck in an ”oh shit" moment.

Bluetti Charger 2 enters the chat. I installed it as a permanent part of the Bronco. Install was easy. I routed the main charge cable down the driver side firewall, passed through the factory firewall gromet, and ran everything cleanly to the cargo area. The unit is mounted directly to my cargo molle panel so it is secure, out of the way, and part of the build instead of loose gear. Now anytime the Bronco is running, it is actively charging my power stations instead of just draining things and hoping Thor, the Thunder God, holds me in his favor.

For power storage I run two units that cover different roles. The Bluetti AC2A is my smaller, portable unit and it lives on my cargo shelf. That is my grab and go power for a heated blanket, charging camera batteries, running my diesel heater, and the random small stuff that always pops up at camp. It is light, easy to reach, and simple to deploy outside the truck.

The Bluetti AC200L is my larger battery and it stays in the Bronco full time as the base power source. It runs my Starlink, keeps my 48qt @WolfBox fridge cold, and handles the heavier loads when we are parked. The game changer is that this system can support the truck’s battery with its reverse charging capabilities, so I can easily carge the OEM battery while running my auxiliary switched lighting, including my roof rack lights, without constantly worrying that I am setting myself up for another Ocala morning. It also supports adding solar as a power input, so you can still charge your gear - even when the truck is parked.

In real use the flow is simple. While driving I am charging. When parked I am running camp. In the morning the Bronco starts like normal. No more watching voltage, no more shutting lights off early, and no more failed starts in the middle of the woods.

When I show the app during trips you can see power flowing in while driving and flowing out while camp is running, and it finally feels like the electrical side of the build matches the rest of the truck. I went from a dead battery in the forest to basically unlimited off grid power with a Bronco that is always ready to move. That peace of mind alone makes this one of the most practical upgrades I have done for overlanding.

A few people have asked what exact gear I am running, so I put everything in one place to make it easy. The Charger 2 that ties into the Bronco, the Bluetti AC2A portable unit, and the Bluetti AC200L main battery are all here if you want to check out the same setup and see how it might fit your build.

Charger 2: https://amzn.to/46hmcgS

AC2A: https://amzn.to/3LYmjar

AC200L: https://amzn.to/4qKf6d7

How are you all handling camp power without risking the truck battery? Are you raw dogging it? Or have you made upgrades?

Would love to hear about your setup. Happy to answer anything about mine.

I have the same setup with an EcoFlow Delta 2. It is indeed pretty clutch. I've paired it with a Renogy 120W panel on the roof which pretty much negates the draw of Starlink and my fridge, though I only swap the XT60 cable from the Bronco's inverter to the Delta 2 when I'm going to be in the same place for a few days. For the most part, starting my engine for 30m each morning will bring all appliances back to full. I have the EcoFlow glacier, so it has 284Wh of battery dedicated internally, but that acts more like a reserve.

As for lighting camp, nothing beats a LightRanger or similar.

I'm glad to see Bluetti stepping up thir DC charger with bidirectional charging. This is the main reason I went with the Ecoflow system for 2 of my vehicles. Until now, they were the only ones doing bidirectional.

I have a Bluetti Elite 100v2 that has become my main 'weekend' power station and I have considered adding the Charger 2 to the Bronco. I think yours is the first real world writeup I've seen on it.

I'll be throwing more at it this weekend, as I'm going to do some cold camping at Osceola National Forest in about 20-30 degrees. Lithium doesn't really like cold, so we will see how efficiently it runs with the added stress of the temperatures.

I’m glad you decided to write this up. Until I saw your IG story, I’d just kept it in the back of mind and I’d be rushing to do something before my April getaway.

I need to research a bit more on additional storage beyond the AC200L for aux lighting guarantee + camp essentials, but your breakout makes it a bit easier to decide.

I've run my E100 in sub freezing temps a few times.

It takes a while for the E100 to warm up enough to start charging, roughly an hour in 20-degree temps, that's just leaving it in the Bronco overnight. So far, it's always recovered. The second night I draped a small heated seat pad over it and that seemed to help warm it up about 15-20 minutes faster.

I've been intrigued by their sodium battery, since I do winter trips on a regular basis. I'm not sure I want to fork over the money for one though. I probably have enough of these stupid power stations as it is!

I run an onboard setup using Renogy components. I'll have to do another video of the current setup.
But... If it works for you, then it works for you!
I find these portable solar generators pricey, take up a lot of space but are useful.
Having 2 of them gives you twice as many inverters than you probably need, twice as many controllers, takes up twice the space, adds twice the weight...
I find most people who start off with a setup like this eventually end up building something more efficient and 'built in'.

Great write up! Having a dead battery in the middle of nowhere isn't any fun!

To the OP, did you have key on engine off on the trip that started this quest?

Just to add to this, I would agree the bi-directional is the way to go, but I also keep a Gooloo GT3000 jumper, it doesn't take up that much space and its useful if needed on other vehicles.

With all these chargers, you'd have a good argument to use the HOV lane as an Electric Vehicle (lol). Great write-up.

Wise move. The little grey/orange box suspended below the shelf is my little @WolfBox battery jumper. Added redundancies, but also helpful when I find someone else dead on the side of the road.

I've posted this in other threads, but this is mine. Built into the rear of the truck for storage, and serving a few other purposes. It's got 100Ah of juice for all manner of camping gadgetry, and instead of having some reverse charging voodoo, I can just keep a jump pack in the drawer that can be charged from the aux batteries.

AC180 and Charger 1.

I only use battery powered devices (lighting, electronics) and a 12V fridge on the AC180 so no draw on Bronco battery while in camp.

NOCO for dead battery if it happens.

That sounds almost exactly like my prior setup. Sub the AC180 with the AC2A. How much time were you getting out of your AC180 with the fridge plugged in with no other power?
