I guess it depends on overlanding or a trip to the big city. But in both cases it is my phone and cash, and the first aid and trauma kits and water.
Very smart list. No matter where the trip is, having water, a phone, cash, and a good first aid kit covers a whole lot of problems.

In my younger days the first thing I would bring is a cooler of iced down beer.

I have never used or felt the need for chains?? I will even happily spend an extra day or two in the hotel waiting for a storm to clear or pull winch cable to avoid chains…but that is just me😜😃…I have a lot of stuff packed away I CARRY ALL THE TIME and have never used in my Bronco on a “road” trip…what I do use is my credit card and phone…off road it would be the high lift and tow/snatch strap…along with TP/wipes of course…party on!
I haven't used chains on road in 50 years, but off road have made go/no go possible more than I can count. No hotels where I might use them and I'd have to wait until spring.

Kool! I guess I just haven’t been in that situation with good M/T tires…for me once you are sitting on the frame/body in 3-4’+ of snow/mud, chains aren’t gonna help…ice may be a different story…wheel with buddies!

PS; I will admit I am pretty lazy and chains are just too big a pita to be anything but a serious last resort…

Curious what the one thing is you MUST bring on the road with you.

Could be recovery gear, snacks, tools… anything you refuse to leave home without 😄
The plastic bag family. A couple of gallon, quart, and sandwich bags. Always come in handy for any trip I take...

That’s one of those things you never think about until you need one… and then suddenly you’re glad you brought dozens of them 😅

For folks that have been around for a long time, there isn't just "one" thing you always have in your car, regardless of whether or not its a road trip

- Several water bottles
- Mountain money (toilet paper)
- Road flares (I have used these more than I can count in my life, probably 20x)
- "get home bag" (different than a bug-out bag, full change of clothes+rain jacket,+hat+sunglasses), power bars, money, insulated water bottle, comfortable walking/hiking shoes) all in a non-descript lightweight backpack
- first aid kit with hemostatic gauze
- Jumper cables/jump starter
- portable electric tire pump and flat fix it tools (vulcanized rubber plugs, awl, insert tool)
- emergency tool kit+duct tape+multiple bungee cords
- fire extinguisher (bigger in Bronco than what is in my BMW)

This isn't just for the Bronco, it is in every vehicle I own. It is totally worth the space. I have used everything at least once in my 40 years of driving.

A good 9mm. (Among other things)
TBH that is like saying "wearing underwear and socks". Your response is a given. Has nothing to do with a Bronco road trip. Don't leave home without it. Whether you are walking, biking, or driving!

This may be alarming to some, but socks and often underwear are rarities for me. I work from home, live in shorts, t-shirts and flip flops down here in FL. So, can’t assume others follow what some consider “the basics”, which includes firearms. But, I get it and fully agree. Just answering the OP’s question and hadn’t seen it mentioned. Standard equipment, always.

Commando! I love it! (I just can't do that unless wearing a bathing suit, dunno why...). Also my feet have poor circulation, so I am pretty much always wearing socks unless I am in Hawaii (and then no Bronco)

Yeah I quit wearing underwear and socks in Vietnam…had to wear socks for work boots/dress shoes but pretty much totally gave up socks when retired and moved to beach town…never really had a use for a gun either…

Gotcha, yeah, I find myself regularly warm/hot, so the fewer layers, down here, the better. As for the other item, though I’ve never had a personal need for a fire extinguisher, I still own 2. Some things are just worth protecting. Learned that when I was a kid, sitting in a federal courthouse, 20 feet from some guys who decided my beautiful aunt shouldn’t continue living. Epiphanies happened, and lessons were learned.

To each their own! :)

P.S. - Send my regards to Steamer Lane. Loved surfing there!!
