I made a crappy discovery yesterday. I'm getting ready to do an oil change and walk into my go to place for auto parts and get to the filter shelf and the shelf is nearly completely empty. I went to the counter to find out what that was all about and was told that there was some kind of disruption but the guy didn't know what. I started going from place to place and all the local stores were nearly out of filters. Thankfully, the dealership had lots but if you like to use a specific brand you might want to find some and stock up if you can. A company called First Brands went down in a huge mess. This happened late last year and the shortages started making themselves known after February 2026. Anyway, I thought people should know. The article below is quite the read and quite the scandal.

That article is from September of 2025, a more current announcement: First Brands Executives Charged With Multibillion-Dollar Fraud

“The defendants operated First Brands as a ‘Ponzi’ scheme in which new loan proceeds were used to pay back old lenders and to fund their extravagant lifestyle,” said Executive Special Agent in Charge of the IRS-CI Washington, D.C. Field Office"

The filter brand was/is FRAM, I wouldn't use a FRAM filter on a 2 Cycle Weed Eater = they are junk filters.

FRAM used to make the best filters on the market (the original Ultras) before First Brands' cost cutting started. Yet another victim of private equity groups...

The article is paywalled, but don't need to read it to get an idea. If an auto parts manufacture is going BK in an environment where the average new car price tag is $50k+ and folks are looking to make pennies stretch to nickels right now - then it has to be poor management...

Not only Fram but Trico, Anco, Michelin wipers, Raybestos brake parts, Autolite spark plugs and Carter fuel and water pumps, Reese towing, Draw-Tite towing, Bulldog towing and many others.

Many have been acquired by PGI.

My son's employer was discontinuing Trico wiper blades about 6 months ago - said they couldnt get them anymore. He asked me if I wanted any as they were 'just throwing them away'. I told him I'd take whatever they had for the 4 vehicles the wife & I have... Got 4 pairs for the Bronco - I should be set for a while!

I recently bought 3 Motorcraft oil filters for my Bronco online through Walmart. Should i be concerned they are confederate? They look look exactly like the one i bought for my last oil changed that I got from Auto Zone.

I wouldn't think. I don't think Ford used First Brands to manufacture their filters. Thankfully, my dealer had lots.

Yeah I remember reading about this a while back, pretty sad what they did. Now the Fram part is no big loss, they've been known to not be what they used to be for a long time now.

Maybe, but I remember seeing a list of everything that this conglomerate owned...and that many aftermarket companies going out at once are going to leave a MASSIVE void in the market that won't be easy to fill. It's going to negatively impact everyone else for a bit.
